At MARC, our clinical campus was designed with intention, and art has always been a central part of that vision.
When MARC was founded, one of our founders carried with them the memory of friends and family members in New York City who were gifted artists and whose lives were impacted by addiction and overdose. They feared that recovery would take away the pain that fueled their creativity, or that getting sober would mean losing the very thing that made them artists and was an essence of who they were. Therefore, many incredible people lost their lives because they feared recovery would take away their creativity and turn them into someone they were not.
We wanted our space to tell a different story.
Rather than filling our walls with generic motivational posters, we chose art that inspires, calms, challenges, and creates connection. Throughout MARC’s clinical campus, you’ll find work from friends and family members impacted by addiction, mental health, and behavioral health challenges; local artists in recovery; local artists who support our work and our mission; artwork created by our own patients; and prints from some of the famous artists who continue to inspire us.
Every piece is intentional.
Our hope is that the art at MARC helps patients feel seen, grounded, and inspired, and reminds them that recovery does not erase creativity. Rather recovery gives creativity room to breathe, to grow, and to become something even more powerful.
