The "August Shift" is real.
Have you noticed changes in your child over the last week? Maybe they are staying in their room longer, getting irritable over small things, or completely ignoring any talk about the upcoming school year.
Before assuming it is just a bad mood, remember that the countdown to late August triggers a lot of hidden anxiety for adolescents. The pressure of social shifting, academic workloads, and losing their summer freedom weighs heavily.
Instead of forcing a daily countdown or trying to fix their mood, try these three adjustments this week:
1️⃣ Shift the wake-up time gently. Do not wait until the night before the first day. Start shifting alarms 15 minutes earlier every few days now.
2️⃣ Validate the dread. If they say, "I hate school," avoid responding with "It won't be that bad!" Instead, try: "Yeah, leaving summer behind is really tough. I get it."
3️⃣ Map out what stays predictable. Anxiety grows in the unknown. Focus on what remains the same—like family dinners, their bedroom setup, or weekend routines.
Transition seasons are tough, but you do not have to navigate them alone. Our team at PA Horizons Counseling helps Montgomery County families establish balance, reduce anxiety, and build sustainable routines.
