🌟Please help us welcome Justin George, MS, LPC-A

We’re so excited to officially welcome Justin George as the newest associate clinician at Travelers Rest Counseling Associates.

Justin brings a thoughtful, grounded presence to the therapy room and has a real gift for walking alongside people as they make sense of who they are, where they’ve been, and where they want to go next. His approach is deeply individualized and especially supportive for those who may feel unsure, overwhelmed, or hesitant about starting therapy.

Justin has experience working across inpatient, outpatient, group, and individual therapy settings, which allows him to support clients through a wide range of life experiences and challenges. He works with young adults and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment, identity, grief and loss, anger, and family dynamics, always with care, curiosity, and respect for each person’s story.

Justin is now open for referrals, and we’re genuinely grateful to have him on our team. We’re confident he’ll be a wonderful support to the clients and families we serve.

Welcome to TRCA, Justin. We’re so glad you’re here!!

đź’ś We are so excited to share that our dear friend Jim Holder, MA, LPC, MAC will be presenting at our upcoming South Carolina Society of Adlerian Psychology Annual Conference this October in Greenville!

Jim is one of those rare people who can take the heaviest topics—addiction, early life struggles, hidden themes in memory—and make them feel human, hopeful, and full of possibility. With nearly 50 years of experience in counseling and prevention, he brings both wisdom and kindness to every conversation.

At the conference, Jim will be leading two powerful workshops:
✨ Guiding Words in Early Recollections — uncovering the themes that shape our lives and relationships.
✨ Sobriety Enhancement Strategies — Adlerian tools for reframing, rediscovering purpose, and building lasting change.

We (Lindsay Hill & Calvin Armerding) can tell you from personal experience: Jim is as genuine and encouraging as they come. If you’ve ever wanted to feel both challenged and uplifted in the same breath, his sessions are the place to be.

🎉 Next up in our amazing conference lineup: Kelly Pfeiffer!

Kelly is a Positive Discipline trainer with over 25 years of experience, and she’s bringing two creative, interactive workshops to Greenville this October:
🖍️ Draw on Your Strengths – For Adults & Children
👩‍👩‍👧 Experiential Parent Education with Positive Discipline

I love that our conference doesn’t just talk theory — it gives people real, hands-on ways to connect, encourage, and grow. Kelly’s sessions are going to be full of energy and practical takeaways for anyone working with parents, kids, or communities.

✨ Can’t wait to see this lineup come together!

🌿 We’re hiring at Travelers Rest Counseling Associates (Upstate)!

But not just anyone. We’re looking for one exceptional therapist to join our team as a new associate.

We have an office ready. Supervision’s covered. And we’ll help with marketing — but you need to be hungry, committed, and not afraid to do the work of building.

Extra love if you work with kids. Or if you’ve got a specialty you’re dying to grow.

Here’s what you get:
✨ A furnished office in our cozy Travelers Rest space
✨ A 65/35 revenue split to start — your 65% goes to you; the rest funds team trainings, travel, meals, and connection (not our paychecks)
✨ Free clinical supervision with Calvin or Lindsay
✨ Flexibility to set your own schedule, hours, and caseload goals
✨ No quotas. No micromanaging. No corporate nonsense.

Here’s what we’re looking for:
🌀 A dependable, passionate therapist who wants to grow their caseload
🌀 Someone who cares about being part of a strong, supportive team
🌀 Excited to contribute to the heart and growth of our practice
🌀 Bonus points if you see kids or have a clinical niche you love

If you’re serious about meaningful work and long-term growth, we’d love to meet you.

What do counselors/therapists do when we see clients in public?

For many counselors, this can be a nerve-wracking experience, filled with catastrophic fears of losing their license. This conversation should put some of these fears to rest, and also remind us all of the central importance of mutual respect and an ongoing informed consent process.

"I had a terrible childhood...am I screwed?"

Lots of psychotherapies are quietly deterministic in how they understand the relationship between the past and the present. "X event happened, so therefore I am this way." While of course the past is important in shaping who we are, a telelogical, goal-oriented, future-focused way of understanding human behavior can be more encouraging, empowering, and hopeful.
