Delayed cord clamping is when the umbilical cord is not clamped immediately after birth. Instead, the cord is left intact for a period of time—often at least 3-5 minutes —to allow additional blood to flow from the placenta to the newborn.

Some benefits include:

🩸 Increased blood volume and iron stores for the baby

🩸 Better circulation during the transition to life outside the womb

🩸 Reduced risk of iron deficiency during infancy

🩸 For premature babies, it may reduce the need for blood transfusions and lowers the risk of other complications

Delayed cord clamping gives your baby extra time to receive valuable blood and oxygen from the placenta before the cord is clamped—a small pause that can provide important benefits during those first precious moments after birth.
