Understanding the Brain Circuitry of Addiction π§
Addiction involves changes across three interacting brain circuits, each corresponding to a stage of the addiction cycle. During the binge/intoxication stage, the basal ganglia drive reward and make drug-related cues increasingly motivating through dopamine signaling.
As use continues, the withdrawal/negative affect stage emerges, involving the extended amygdala and habenula. This stage produces stress, anxiety, and dysphoria, pushing individuals to keep using not for pleasure, but for relief.
Finally, the preoccupation/anticipation stage engages the prefrontal cortex and insula, heightening craving while weakening the self-control needed to resist relapse. Together, these three stages reinforce one another over time, blunting reward, amplifying stress, and eroding executive control, which is why addiction is understood as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder rather than a temporary behavioral choice.
