Board Spotlight: Shaun Mickus

After nearly 30 years at Johnson & Johnson and 35 years in the healthcare industry, Shaun set three simple goals for his work in this next chapter: find work that brings him joy, helps as many people as possible, and minimizes the stress and deadlines of corporate life.

Serving on the Board of Trustees of The Father Center of New Jersey checked every box.

Although he didn’t grow up with a consistent father figure himself, he considers himself fortunate to have had other positive male role models in his life who “kept me out of trouble.”

Years later, during a men’s retreat at his church, a talk about a father’s loving care prompted him to reflect on his own childhood. The experience reinforced his desire to help young men find the kind of guidance and support that shaped his own life.

Michael Velasquez of the New Life Driving School recently came to The Father Center of New Jersey to talk about the importance of obtaining a driver’s license and pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as a pathway to stable employment, sharing his personal journey to members of our cohort.

Michael’s presentation provided valuable insight into the CDL process, training requirements, career opportunities, and the long-term benefits of entering the transportation industry.

“Seeing someone who has overcome challenges and achieved success gave our participants hope and motivation to continue working toward their own goals,” says Yanira Medina, Senior Program Manager/WIB Program Manager (Bilingual).

Today was an engaging and interactive day for our Workforce Innovation Board (WIB) participants as they took part in a mock interview workshop designed to strengthen their interview skills and prepare them for future employment opportunities.

Participants had the opportunity to practice interviewing in a supportive environment while learning effective strategies for answering common interview questions with confidence. A major focus of today’s session was how to professionally address questions related to a criminal background.

As the father of an 18-year-old son and a 19-year-old daughter, RodneyEmerson understands firsthand how profoundly an engaged parent can shape a child’s future. Yet it was the values his own parents instilled in him growing up in Pittsburgh that motivated him to join the Board of The Father Center of New Jersey.

“My dad was a smart, fun-loving and gregarious guy, but he also taught us strong values,” he recalls. “He encouraged honesty and self-confidence, and told us to dream big while understanding that mistakes are part of growing up.

“Everyone has the right to be young and dumb,” Rodney says with a smile. “The important thing as a parent is to help your children learn and become better.”

When Jonas first came to The Father Center, he was searching for resources that would help him improve his life and secure meaningful employment. He was determined to create a better future for himself and was ready to take the necessary steps toward achieving his goals.

With the support and encouragement of The Father Center team, Jonas enrolled in our SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) training program. Through his dedication and hard work, he successfully completed the training
and earned his SORA certification.

One of the proudest moments came when Jonas returned to The FatherCenter wearing his security uniform. He walked through our doors with a big smile and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment, serving as an inspiration to both staff and participants. His success is a testament to what can be achieved through determination, perseverance, and the right support.
