Green flags for a pelvic floor physical therapy appointment:
âś… Spends one full hour with you - not bouncing between several patients, not leaving you alone in the room for 15 minutes, just one hour of hearing your story and working with you only
✅ An internal pelvic floor assessment is offered - if they offer one and you (the patient) decline, totally fine! If they “don’t do internal”, “don’t need to do internal because they know what’s going on” that is a huge red flag. There is no substitute here. It is not helpful to see someone for a pelvic floor issue who is not able/willing to assess your pelvic floor.
âś… You are working toward your goals - if you want to run, great! Your exercises and plan should be specific to that. Your therapist should understand your goals and each visit should be working toward those, not something they decided you need to work on.
✅ You are progressed to exercises in standing - you don’t live on your back, so your pelvic floor needs to be able to work standing up, on one leg, etc just like you do!
âś… They assess your full body - low back, hip, knee, and ankle can all play a role in pelvic floor strength and function! Your pelvic floor physical therapist should be comfortable assessing and treating all of these body parts too.
