John J. Ritz

John J. Ritz, born February 29, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026, in his beloved hometown. His 70 years were woven deeply into the fabric of the city he loved—a life marked by steadfast devotion to his work, his family, and the simple joys that brought him contentment.

John’s story is one of quiet strength and unwavering loyalty. Known throughout his life as someone “very family-oriented” and “kind-hearted,” those closest to him found comfort in his familiar ways. He could be as stubborn as the day is long, yet no one ever doubted his generosity—John would give the shirt off his back to anyone, no questions asked. He was also, undeniably, set in his ways; a trait that brought both charm and a gentle frustration to those who knew him well.

His career as a phone operator spanned decades. This steadfast role reflected his enduring reliability and willingness to answer when needed—not just at work, but in all corners of his life. John’s daily routines, shaped by hard work and perseverance, became the bedrock of a steady life that resonated deeply with those around him.

Outside of work, John cultivated a blend of passions that made up his unique spirit. He found excitement in the world of stock trading and bonds, always managing to squeeze in a lively political discussion, eager to share his well-considered viewpoints with friends and family alike. But if there was one unifying thread to his free time, it was his devotion to baseball and, most of all, his beloved Detroit Tigers. The sound of a ballgame on the radio or television was often the background to conversations at his home, a constant that those dearest to him will always remember.

Family always came first for John. His love for his family never wavered, and his presence leaves a profound ache in the hearts of those who survive him. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Robin (Nelson) Worley, and brother Mitchell (the late Patricia) Ritz. John’s legacy lives on through his nephews and nieces: Eric (Elizabeth) Ritz, Steven Ritz, Amanda (Rob) Ryan, Chris (Nataly) Worley, Krystal (David) Galvan, Megan Ritz (Mark Smith), and Shelby Ritz—all of whom carry forward the family traits of kindness, resilience, and commitment that John embodied.

John is reunited in rest with his beloved wife, Colette Ritz. The memory of his parents, John and Eleanor Ritz, also precedes him in death. Their spirits, together again, are surely finding comfort in his company once more.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at visitation, which will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at The Allen Park Chapel - Martenson Family Of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Rd, Allen Park, MI 48101. The funeral service will take place the followng day on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Afterwards, John will be laid to rest at Woodmere Cemetery, 9400 West Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48209.

John’s presence and steady love shaped his family and community in immeasurable ways. His bear hugs, hearty laughter, and warm heart will be missed beyond measure. As his life is remembered and celebrated, those who loved him take solace in knowing that John J. Ritz lived his years with honor, devotion, and an unmistakable sense of purpose.

Bernice Sandusky

With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we remember and celebrate the life of Bernice Sandusky, who passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on June 6, 1949, Bernice’s journey through life was one marked by courage, faith, and a deep, unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Bernice was the beloved wife of the late Arbie "Ted" Sandusky, who preceded her in death, and the cherished daughter of Joseph and Bernice Wines, whose memory she carried close throughout her days. From an early age, Bernice was shaped by their love and by a strong sense of family that became her guiding force and her greatest joy.

A woman of enduring faith, Bernice was a devoted parishioner at both St. Mary Annunciation Catholic Church and St. Cyprian Catholic Church. Her steadfast spirituality was evident in the way she lived her life—with kindness, humility, and generosity that reached far beyond the pews. She nurtured her family, friends, and community with the warmth and hope she carried in her heart, always placing the needs and happiness of others above her own.

Family was, in every sense, the center of Bernice’s world. She was the loving and supportive mother of Jacqueline Wilkins and Theodore Sandusky, whom she guided with gentle wisdom and unwavering support. Her role as grandmother to Brendan Sandusky, Lauren Wilkins, and Mikelle Murphy brought her immense pride and boundless love—memories of laughter and guidance that her grandchildren will cherish throughout their lives. Bernice was also blessed to see her family grow to another generation, adoring her great-grandson, Oliver Sandusky, who brought her joy in her later years.

Those who knew Bernice well remember her generous heart and selfless nature—she was family-oriented in every fiber of her being and would always put her loved ones first. Whether celebrating milestones or providing quiet strength in difficult times, she was a steady presence and a source of comfort for those lucky enough to be part of her life. Friends, who felt like extended family, mourn her passing and remember the kindness, compassion, and steadfast loyalty she shared so freely.

Among the many chapters of Bernice’s life, perhaps none spoke more to her character than her journey as a breast cancer survivor. Facing adversity with bravery and resilience, she inspired all who knew her with her courage and her refusal to let hardship define her spirit. Her strength remains a testament to her remarkable will and tenacity.

Some of Bernice’s most treasured moments were spent at the family cabin up north—a place she and her husband lovingly built together. Those serene days, filled with laughter and the peace of nature, were a reflection of her ability to find joy in simple pleasures and the bonds of togetherness.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation in remembrance of Bernice at The Trenton Chapel - Martenson Family Of Funeral Homes, located at 3200 West Rd, Trenton, MI 48183. Visitation will be held on August 15, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

As we say goodbye to Bernice Sandusky, we take solace in the legacy she leaves: a family united by love, a circle of friends inspired by her devotion, and a heart that beat with faith, grace, and compassion. Though she will be dearly missed, her spirit lives on in every life she touched, guiding and uplifting generations to come.
