🎀 Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

October is a reminder to take care of ourselves—not just the people we care for.

As an occupational therapist, I think a lot about how our health affects the everyday things we often take for granted: getting dressed, caring for our families, working, cooking, exercising, sleeping, and simply feeling like ourselves.

Breast cancer can affect so much more than the body. Treatment can impact strength, range of motion, sensation, fatigue, pain, emotional well-being, and the ability to participate in everyday activities. Occupational therapy can be part of the journey by helping people regain function, adapt routines, conserve energy, and return to the activities that matter most to them. 💗

This month is also personal for me. I lost my cousin to breast cancer, while another aunt of mine beat breast cancer. Two very different journeys that remind me just how much this disease can touch a family.

So this month, please take a few minutes to prioritize your health. Know what is normal for your own body, keep up with recommended screenings, and don't ignore changes that concern you. Early detection can make a difference.

And if someone you love is going through breast cancer treatment, remember that sometimes the most helpful thing you can offer is support with the everyday stuff: meals, transportation, household tasks, appointments, or simply being there. 💕

🎀 Here’s to awareness, early detection, treatment, survivorship, and remembering those we’ve lost.

In OT, we don’t always work on one skill at a time. Sometimes, the most meaningful progress happens when we combine several skills into one activity.

🧠 Cognitive activity: The child has to listen, remember directions, problem-solve, make decisions, or shift attention.

⚖️ Balance: The child is working on postural control, coordination, and maintaining stability while moving or completing a task.

🧍 Body awareness: The child is learning where their body is in space, how much force to use, and how to coordinate their movements.

When we put these together, we’re asking the child to think, move, and respond at the same time, just like they need to do in everyday life.

Think about:

Sitting at a desk while listening to a teacher

Navigating a busy classroom

Playing a sport or on the playground

Getting dressed while following a sequence

Maintaining balance while reaching for or manipulating objects

Managing their body while also paying attention to instructions

These activities help children practice motor planning, attention, coordination, postural control, and functional participation in a way that is engaging and meaningful.

✨ OT is about helping the whole child participate more successfully in their world, not just improving one isolated skill.

And yes, sometimes that looks like a game. But there is always a purpose behind the play. 💙

Dr. Dana gave me my first OT job out of grad school and opened my eyes to things we were not taught in grad school: presume competence, nonspeaking not nonverbal, brain body connection, motor coaching an individual's body awareness, and so much more. She shaped me into the clinician I am today and I'm forever grateful for her guidance and teachings.

🍎 Opening lunch items with hemiparesis IS occupational therapy. 🖐️

What looks like a simple lunch routine can actually involve a LOT of skills, especially for a child with hemiparesis.

In these videos, we’re working on:
✨ Bilateral hand use
✨ Hand strength and grasp
✨ Stabilizing with one hand while manipulating with the other
✨ Motor planning & coordination
✨ Fine motor control
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Independence with daily routines

And most importantly… functional independence. ❤️

Opening a snack, peeling a wrapper, twisting a lid, or opening a food container may seem small—but these are the everyday occupations children need to participate in at school and at home.

As pediatric OTs, we don’t just work on “hand skills.”
We work on the skills that help kids DO the things that matter to them.

This is OT. 💙

Friday was such a special reminder of why I love what I do. ❤️

I had the opportunity to spend time with an incredible daycare/VPK team, providing training on positive guidance strategies and supporting challenging behaviors from an Occupational Therapy perspective.

I am so grateful for schools and educators who are willing to learn, ask questions, reflect on their practices, and look at behavior through a different lens. Because when we take the time to understand why a child is struggling, we can respond with connection, compassion, and strategies that actually support the child.

As an OT and former ESE teacher, education has always been a huge part of my heart. I truly believe that when we equip teachers with the knowledge and tools they need, we don't just make the classroom easier, we change the experience a child has at school. ❤️

Thank you to this wonderful team for welcoming me, engaging in the conversation, and being so open to learning. It was an absolute pleasure!

If your daycare, preschool, or school would like to bring practical, developmentally-informed training to your staff, I'd love to connect.

Here's to helping teachers know better, feel more confident, and ultimately…do better. 💛

Thursday was a bittersweet day... this sweet boy graduated from occupational therapy! 💙🎉

For the past year and a half, I've had the privilege of watching him grow, work hard, and accomplish goals that once felt so far away. Every session was filled with determination, laughter, problem-solving, and so many little victories that added up to something really big.

As pediatric OTs, we don't just work on skills, we build relationships. We celebrate the first time a task finally clicks, cheer through the hard days, and watch confidence bloom one success at a time. Saying goodbye is never easy, but there is no greater reward than seeing a child no longer need you.

I am incredibly proud of all you've accomplished. Thank you for letting me be a part of your journey.

Keep being smart, funny, brave, keep believing in yourself, and keep showing the world just how capable and amazing you are.

Congratulations on your graduation! You have earned every bit of this moment, and I can't wait to see all the amazing things your future holds. ❤️

Why is bilateral coordination so important? 🤲🧠

Bilateral coordination is the ability to use both sides of the body together in a smooth, organized way. It helps children complete everyday tasks that many of us take for granted!

In this activity, one hand is following the color sequence while the other hand matches the colors on a separate chart. This encourages the brain to communicate across both hemispheres while also challenging visual tracking, motor planning, attention, and working memory.

Strong bilateral coordination supports skills like: ⭐ Handwriting
⭐ Cutting with scissors
⭐ Buttoning and zipping clothing
⭐ Catching and throwing a ball
⭐ Typing and keyboarding
⭐ Riding a bike
⭐ Self-care and dressing independently

When children have difficulty coordinating both sides of their body, everyday tasks can feel much harder and require extra effort.

The best part? Kids build these skills through fun, engaging activities like this one—learning without even realizing they're working!
