From following steps and measuring ingredients to stirring, pouring, and taking turns, simple cooking activities can support sequencing, attention, fine motor skills, flexible thinking, and shared engagement.

Remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect! Focus on the process, have fun, and enjoy the connection.

Music can be a powerful way for children to express what words sometimes can’t.

For some children, music creates a safe and engaging pathway to:
Explore emotions and self-expression
Build communication skills
Feel safe, connected, and understood
Strengthen social-emotional skills
Discover new ways to communicate and connect

Music therapy uses intentional, evidence-informed musical experiences to support each child’s individual goals—making therapy meaningful, motivating, and fun.

At Reconnections DIR Center, our music therapy services are designed to meet children where they are and help them find their unique way to connect and communicate.

It’s Tip-Off Your Weekend Friday! Every Friday, we share quick tips from our DIR Floortime-based therapy services to support growth, connection, and confidence—starting with small, meaningful moments at home.

This week’s tip: Play freeze dance!
Starting and stopping to music builds body awareness, impulse control, and attention skills—all disguised as FUN!

Freeze dance helps children:
Build body awareness by encouraging movement and control of the body
Strengthen impulse control by stopping on cue
Improve attention and listening skills
Have fun while connecting with the people they love!

Here’s how to play:
1. Pick a favorite song everyone loves.
2. Dance and move while the music plays.
3. When the music stops, FREEZE! Try fun poses or silly faces.
4. Start the music again and keep going!

Switch up who starts and stops the music to keep it exciting!

What’s your favorite song to play freeze dance to?

We’re Hiring: Part-Time Homeschool Teacher 🌿

REConnections DIR Center is growing, and we are looking for a creative, relationship-focused teacher to help us launch our new Specialized Homeschool Program beginning January 2027.

This is not a traditional classroom position. We are building a small, individualized homeschool experience for children who benefit from a different approach to learning—one that supports academics while also recognizing regulation, communication, movement, relationships, independence, and each child’s individual learning profile.

Our first session will run January–May 2027, with the goal of this becoming an ongoing position. We are beginning with one homeschool group, with the goal of expanding to two groups on separate program days as enrollment grows.

What will the program look like?

The teacher will lead a small group of approximately 4–6 students, ages 8–10, through engaging, hands-on learning experiences that include:

• Core academics
• STEAM-based learning
• Project-based and experiential activities
• Dynamic movement incorporated throughout the day
• Social-emotional learning and problem solving
• Executive functioning and independence
• Communication, collaboration, and relationship building
• DIR/Floortime® principles woven throughout the learning environment

One of the things that makes this program especially unique is that students will also participate in Occupational Therapy and Music Therapy group sessions during the program day. The teacher will work alongside our therapy team while maintaining the educational portion of the program.

We would love to find someone who:

✨ Loves teaching creatively and thinking outside of the traditional classroom model
✨ Understands that connection and regulation are foundational to learning
✨ Enjoys working with small groups and adapting instruction to individual learners
✨ Is comfortable collaborating with therapists and other professionals
✨ Brings energy, flexibility, creativity, and strong communication skills
✨ Wants the opportunity to help build something from the beginning

Position Details

Initial Program: January–May 2027
Pay: $24/hour
Paid Planning: An additional 45 minutes of paid planning time for each program day

There may also be opportunities for additional hours through private tutoring clients at the DIR Center, depending on interest, availability, and family needs.

Our goal is to find someone who is excited about helping us build an ongoing homeschool program with room to grow.

If you are an educator who has ever thought, “There has to be another way to do school,” we would love to meet you. 💛

Your child is communicating long before they use words.

Communication isn't just talking—it's every look, gesture, movement, and shared moment. When we shift our focus from waiting for words to understanding connection, we open the door to more meaningful interactions and authentic communication.

At REConnections DIR Center, we follow your child's lead, respond to every attempt to connect, and build communication through relationships—not pressure. Because when children feel understood, their confidence, engagement, and communication grow naturally.

Every child has something to say. Sometimes we just need to learn a new way of listening.

If you're wondering how DIR-based speech, occupational, or music therapy can support your child, we'd love to help. Reach out today to schedule a consultation and learn how our team can support your family's journey.

Swipe through and you'll probably recognize your child in every single one of these moments. That's the point.

The Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities aren't a diagnosis tool, they're a lens for seeing what your child IS ready for, not what they're missing.
When you start noticing these moments at home, everything shifts.

You stop asking 'why won't they?' and start asking 'what do they need to feel safe enough to try?'

Which FEDC lights up your child the most?
The one where you see the gleam?
Tell us below-we'd love to hear which moments make you say, 'Yes, that's my kid.'

Why Wednesday!

At ReConnections DIR Center, we believe every choice a child makes is an opportunity to connect, communicate, and grow. Letting your child choose the instrument or song might seem like a small thing, but it can make a BIG difference in therapy!

When children lead the music, they:
Feel more motivated to participate
Communicate more
Stay connected with their therapist
Build confidence and ownership

Choice isn’t just powerful—it’s playful, meaningful, and right at the heart of the DIR/Floortime approach.

Swipe through to learn more about why choice comes first in music therapy!

P.S. We’d love to hear from you—what’s your child’s favorite song or instrument right now? Let us know in the comments!
