You might say the residents here at Eddy Memorial were "All Shook Up" this week when "The King" himself stopped by our Courtyard Unit. The residents "Can't Help Falling in Love" with Elvis (aka Christopher Tierney of Longevity) who visited with everyone at the dementia unit. Everyone was a little star struck and so excited to see Elvis. The lucky ones even got to dance one-on-one with him. Smiles were all around!

Well, drumming may not be the first activity you'd think of for nursing home residents, but here at Eddy Memorial, our seniors LOVE it, especially with talented local musician and songwriter Pete Furlong. When Pete visits for a music program, he brings an assortment of drums to perform for the residents, including his "handpan drum," which resembles a steel wok but produces a very ethereal and calming sound ideal for meditation, yoga, and acoustic performances. Our residents are so tuned in to Pete that you can hear a pin drop when he is about to play. After his performances, Pete engages with residents one-on-one and helps all the seniors try their hand at playing the drums. Our residents just love this program and Pete's special way with them!

Famed French artist Henri Matisse had a lifelong goal of expressing himself through bold color. And that's just what residents here at Eddy Memorial did as they tried their hand at creating their own Matisse-inspired pieces. They even copied the artist's unique cutout technique dubbed "painted by scissors," in which he cut paper into interesting shapes and then arranged them to create art. The residents loved learning about Matisse through the Artist Spotlight that our activities staffer Angelina does. Residents not only got to try new forms of expressing themselves, the experience also led some down memory lane to reminisce about their own histories in painting and creating art!

Don't mistake arts and crafts as just fun for kids, research has shown that such activities can offer profound mental health, cognitive, and social benefits for adults, especially those with dementia. Check out our Courtyard residents here at Eddy Memorial who loved engaging in the creative process by painting colorful teapots and arranging flower bouquets. Crafting can offer an alternative way for individuals with dementia to communicate and express themselves where words fail. Tactile activities can also improve mood, lower anxiety and stress., and reduce common behavioral symptoms like wandering. So craft away!

What is more refreshing in the summertime than a nice cold strawberry or blueberry smoothie? Here at Eddy Memory, our residents love them. And did you know that they're incredible SUPERFOODS? Our beloved dietitian and exercise guru Kendra educated everyone on the nutritional benefits of berries this month. Residents from our Terrace assisted living and even independent neighbors at Beechwood joined us for the informative program. Fresh, cool and delish. So enjoy!

Here at Eddy Memorial, one of the things we strive for is keeping our center clean, comfortable, and in ship-shape for our cherished residents. To that end, we congratulate Jennifer Franklin, environmental services aide, who has been named our June Employee of the Month.
