Have you tried this amazing resource? The United States Postal Service "Postmaster Finder" lists the Postmasters for US Post Offices, back to the days of Ben Franklin. More records and more Post Offices are added every week. You can search by name or location. May entries even contain some history about the specific post office. Check it out here: https://about.usps.com/who/profile/history/postmaster-finder/

The Oakland County Genealogical Society needs a Vice President/Program Coordinator. Yes, we're reaching out because we know that there are very wonderful people who follow this page, so we hope you will consider it.

The job? Backing up the President and running meetings when the President can't for the monthly meetings ( not in July or August).

Additionally, the Board meets four times per year and the VP might be asked to Chair this but their experience and perspectives are needed here.

And Program Coordinator: Finding speakers and topics for the monthly meetings and contracting with the speakers on fees, handouts and meeting needs. Lists of potential speakers are available and the VP's own experience helps too!

Time commitment? Attending the monthly meetings and assisting the president and other board members with the running of the meetings (about 2 hours per month, not including any driving). Finding speakers in the spring and summer are key for building out the schedule from September to June, so this is typically done via email and lists of potential speakers. We don't meet in July or August.

Interested? We really need help as President Judy has been doing it and she'd like to lighten her load please. Supporting our genealogy society helps so many researching their families is a HUGE reward of any volunteer in our society. Email your questions or to have a conversation to [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks!

The Oakland County Genealogical Society needs a Recording Secretary! Yes, we're reaching out because we know that there are very wonderful people who follow this page, so we hope you will consider it.

The job? Recording basic information about our monthly meetings ( how many attended in person, or Zoom; what announcem we nts were made; who the speaker was and a brief overview of their topic; and who the speaker and topic are for the next meeting. We can turn on AI to take notes on Zoom and that file can then easily be edited by the Secretary. Then the document is given to our webmaster to post.

Additionally, the Board meets four times per year and the Secretary takes notes for this too. Again, we can turn the AI function to make this easy.

Time commitment? Attending the monthly meetings (2 hours) and editing notes after, and sending to webmaster - maybe another hour. And the four board meetings can go two hours with editing those notes too, so about three hours four additional times of the year. We don't meet in July or August.

Interested? We really need help as President Judy has been doing it and she'd like to lighten her load please. Email your questions or to have a conversation to [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks!

Help with Proofreading the Troy Township Minutes

The Troy Historical Museum has given the Society access to the Early Troy Township Minutes. There are 723 total images; they include much information about early Troy Township. The minute books were imaged years ago, and the image quality varies. We transcribed those articles using tryleo.ai. Although “Leo” is a great tool for recognizing test handwriting, users need to proofread the transcriptions.

If you volunteer to proofread transcriptions, I will send you an image and a transcription. You will check to ensure the text is correct, save the transcription, and return it to me. If you are unable to decipher the handwriting on the image, you will highlight the area on the transcription. A representative of the Museum also checks each page, and I will have access to the original books to correct anything that is not clear.
To volunteer, email Pam Warren: [email protected].
