Why Do We Test Speech During a Hearing Evaluation?

Hearing tones is one thing.

Understanding speech is another.

That's why Beltone evaluates not only what sounds you can hear, but also how well you understand words and conversations in different listening environments. Speech understanding is one of the most important parts of hearing health.

What Really Happens During a Hearing Evaluation?

A hearing evaluation is more than simply listening for beeps.

At Beltone, your appointment may include:

👂 A video ear scan to check for earwax or other physical issues that could affect your hearing

🎧 Comprehensive hearing testing to measure how well you hear different tones and frequencies

🗣️ Speech understanding testing to evaluate how clearly you hear and understand words

📊 A review of your audiogram, which shows the sounds you're hearing well and the sounds you may be missing

Most importantly, your hearing care professional will take the time to explain your results, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations based on your hearing needs and lifestyle. No pressure. No obligation.

Hearing changes can start earlier than many people expect.

Many adults begin noticing measurable changes in hearing in their mid‑30s, and by ages 40–59, about 1 in 5 adults experience some level of hearing loss.

This month is a great time to make your hearing a priority by learning the early signs, scheduling a hearing screening, and taking an active role in your hearing health journey.

Some moments remind us why better hearing matters so much.

We are proud to partner with Hope Speaks to help donate 100 hearing aids to people in need, along with an audiometer and laptop donated by one of our incredible Beltone owners, Daniel Fletcher.

One gentleman’s first reaction when his hearing aids were turned on was, “Why are you shouting at me?” It was the first time he had heard normal sound clearly again.

And watching a little girl hear her mom’s voice clearly for the first time was a moment none of us will ever forget. 💙

Hearing care changes lives, and we are grateful to be part of moments like these.

May is Better Hearing Month, and we’re celebrating in a big way at Beltone: we’re giving away one set of hearing aids every single day this month.

That’s 31 days and 31 winners ready to experience more of life.

Hearing loss often happens so slowly that it’s easy to miss the signs.
Have you noticed yourself:

• Asking people to repeat themselves?
• Feeling like everyone is mumbling?
• Turning the TV up louder than you used to?

Most people wait years to get help, but you don’t have to. Better hearing isn’t just about volume; it’s about staying connected to the people who matter most. Let’s get you back in the conversation.
