Our Executive Director, Kim Gibson, recently had the opportunity to attend the Southeast Centers Directors Association meeting in Augusta, Georgia/South Carolina. A special thank you to Tiffany Clifford and the team at Walton Options for Independent Living for serving as wonderful hosts during this gathering.

One of the highlights of the visit was touring The 523 Gallery, a unique art gallery supported by Walton Options for Independent Living and the Walton Foundation for Independence. Dedicated to showcasing the talents and creativity of artists with disabilities, the gallery features inspiring works that celebrate inclusion, self-expression, and the many contributions of people with disabilities.

Kim shared she appreciated the opportunity to connect with fellow leaders, share ideas, and learn from one another as we continue working to empower and support people with disabilities throughout our communities.

Mental Health Awareness Month, observed each May, provides an important opportunity to increase understanding and support for individuals living with mental health conditions and disorders. In alignment with the Interagency Committee on Disability Research’s (ICDR) mission to improve the lives of people with disabilities through research, practice, and innovation, we are sharing key information, data, and resources to help increase awareness, encourage knowledge-sharing, and strengthen disability and mental health research.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the importance of this effort: an estimated 17.4 million adults with disabilities experience frequent mental distress, which is 32.9% of this population, a rate more than three times higher than that of adults without disabilities. These disparities underscore the need to expand awareness, invest in research, and advance advocacy efforts that support individuals with disabilities who are affected by mental health challenges.

Below, please find relevant data and resources for Mental Health Awareness Month.

Facts & Statistics

Adults with disabilities report frequent mental distress 4.6 times more often than adults without disabilities (CDC)
More than half of adults with both cognitive and mobility disabilities report frequent mental distress, indicating compounded risk across disability types (CDC)
In the United States, more than 1 in 4 adults live with a disability, highlighting the large population impacted by these disparities (CDC)
Frequent mental distress among people with disabilities is associated with chronic conditions, higher healthcare use, and limitations in daily functioning (CDC)
Adults with disabilities are more likely to experience barriers to healthcare access, including cost-related unmet needs, which are linked to worse mental health outcomes (CDC)
During crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, people with disabilities experienced heightened mental health impacts due to isolation, disrupted routines, and reduced access to services (CDC)

World MS Day is tomorrow....
Let’s talk about Multiple Sclerosis. Because what you see on the surface is only a fraction of the story. 🎗️🔥

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often invisible disease of the central nervous system. It disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Because it affects everyone differently, no two journeys with MS look exactly the same.

From chronic fatigue and brain fog to mobility challenges and invisible pain—the hurdles are real. But here is what's even more real: the resilience of the MS community. 🧠⚡

Living with an unpredictable condition means constantly adapting, shifting your mindset, and finding new ways to navigate the world. Lacking a predictable routine or full physical certainty doesn't mean a person lacks the power to reach their life purpose and do exactly what their heart desires.

True inclusion means understanding that disability isn’t always visible. It means building an accessible world where someone with MS doesn't have to fight for accommodation, but is met with understanding, resources, and respect. 🦾✨

To everyone warrior-ing through the unpredictable days, pacing their energy, and keeping their vision alive—we see you, we back you, and we honor your strength.

Let’s keep spreading awareness, breaking down stigmas, and fighting for a world with better treatments and a cure. 🧡

Impossible? Improbable? No. It’s inevitable. 😤🔥

“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” — Christopher Reeve

When you are chasing a massive vision, the world will try to tell you what is "realistic." They might look at what you navigate or what you lack on the surface and assume your goals are out of reach. But lacking certain things in life never takes away your ability to reach your life purpose and achieve exactly what your heart desires.

The moment you decide to lean into your power, summon your inner strength, and lock arms with a community that backs you up, the narrative changes.

At disABILITY LINK, we see it every day. True independence, accessibility, and community liberation aren't just far-off dreams—they are inevitable milestones when we commit to the fight together. 🦾✨

Stop waiting for permission. Your purpose is calling, and your dreams are non-negotiable. Let's make it happen. 🚀

What is one dream or goal you are making inevitable this year? Let us know in the comments below! 👇🏾

Worthiness is non-negotiable. Period. 🎯💥

"People with disabilities are just as worthy as those without disabilities to live happy, productive lives." — Sydney Badeau

Let’s be incredibly clear: navigating the world differently or lacking certain things in life never diminishes your value, your brilliance, or your right to a full, joy-filled existence. It doesn't mean you lack the inner power to reach your life purpose and do exactly what your heart desires.

A happy, productive life isn’t defined by a narrow, outdated standard of what a person "can" or "cannot" do. It’s defined by autonomy, respect, and equal access to opportunities.

At disABILITY LINK, we are fiercely dedicated to ensuring everyone has the rights, resources, and community backing to live their life on their own terms. Worthiness isn't something to be earned—it is an absolute birthright. 🦾✨

Let's keep tearing down the societal biases that try to box people in, and continue building a world where everyone has the space to thrive.

Disability is not a monolith. It is diverse, nuanced, and beautifully unique. 👥🌐✨

When people think of the word "disability," they often default to a single, generalized image. But the truth is, the disability community is the largest and most intersectional minority group in the world, crossing every race, age, gender, and socioeconomic background.

Every single individual has their own lived experiences, perspectives, and opinions.

Generalizing or placing a community of over 1 billion people into a single box completely erases their individuality. True inclusion means honoring those unique perspectives and recognizing that there is no "one size fits all" approach to access, advocacy, or lived experience. 🗣️🔥

Let’s commit to listening to individual stories rather than making blanket assumptions. Stop generalizing. Start learning.

How are you actively amplifying diverse voices in your community or industry? Let’s talk in the comments! 👇🏾
