Some moments remind us exactly why peer support matters. 💚

This week, GMHCN Peer Mentor staff member Ginger Howze experienced a powerful full-circle moment when she returned to DRC—not as a participant, but as someone sharing her testimony, offering encouragement, and representing the work of the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network and our Peer Mentor Program.

In 2017, while participating in DRC herself, Ginger was connected with Gina and first learned about becoming a Certified Peer Specialist. She knew then that she wanted to use her lived experience to help others and that, one day, she wanted to work for GMHCN.

It took seven years to reach that goal.

Today, Ginger is doing the very work she once dreamed of doing.

During her visit, she also had the opportunity to thank some of the people who played an important role in both her and Jeff’s journey—including Dr. Ogletree, whose impact Ginger says she will never forget.

For Ginger, being able to stand in that same space and share hope with others was more than a professional opportunity. It was a reminder of how far she has come and of what can happen when someone is given connection, support, opportunity, and the chance to believe in something beyond their current circumstances.

From receiving peer support to becoming the peer who provides it.

These are the moments that make us incredibly proud of our team and the work happening through peer support across Georgia.

This week, the Respect Institute of Georgia is in Moultrie, Georgia, creating space for something powerful—people sharing their stories, finding their voices, and using lived experience to create connection and change.

The Respect Institute is about more than learning how to tell your story. It’s about recognizing that your story has value, your experience has purpose, and your voice can make a difference.

We love seeing the connections being made this week and watching participants step into the power of their own experiences. This is what peer support looks like—people coming together, learning from one another, and reminding each other that hope and recovery are possible.

Thank you to everyone in Moultrie who has welcomed the Respect Institute and helped make this week possible. We’re excited to see the stories, advocacy, and impact that continue long after the training ends.

The Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, in partnership with the City of Tucker Parks & Recreation, invites you to join us for a powerful morning of remembrance, hope, healing, and community connection in recognition of Su***de Prevention Month and Recovery Month.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: KEVIN HINES

Kevin Hines is a nationally recognized su***de prevention speaker, advocate, and survivor. After surviving a su***de attempt from the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000, Kevin dedicated his life to sharing a message of hope and reminding others that recovery is possible and every life is worth fighting for. We are honored to welcome him as our keynote speaker.

Applications are opening soon for the Ready4Reentry Forensic Peer Mentor Training Program!

This training prepares Certified Peer Specialists to use their lived experience within the justice system to support others navigating reentry and recovery.

Applicants must:

* Have lived experience within the justice system
* Already hold a current CPS certification: CPS-AD, CPS-MH, CPS-Y, or CPS-P

Application Window:
September 1 at 8:00 AM through September 14 at 5:00 PM

This training will be held in person:
October 7–9, 2026

support available 24/7 for anyone facing emotional distress. This year’s campaign is designed to make it easy for everyone to participate—businesses, schools, libraries, community groups and individuals.

On September 15th, we invite you to join us at the Bartow Peer Support, Wellness & Respite Center as we celebrate 15 years of connection, recovery, peer support, and community.

Over the years, countless individuals have walked through our doors and found a space where lived experience is valued, people are met where they are, and no one has to navigate their journey alone. This celebration is about every person who has been part of that story — our peers, staff, community partners, supporters, and friends.

Today, some of our GMHCN staff had the opportunity to show up and celebrate two of our own, Robert Pugh and Kenika Weaver, as they graduated from CARES and became Certified Peer Specialists in Addictive Disease!

There’s something special about being able to step outside of our everyday work and simply show up for one another. Seeing our friends and colleagues continue to grow, do the work, and use their lived experience to serve others is what peer support and community are all about.

We’re grateful to the Georgia Council for Recovery for welcoming us into this space and allowing us to be part of such a meaningful celebration.

Congratulations, Robert and Kenika! We are proud of you and grateful for the work you continue to do in the peer community.
