Understanding Anticoagulants: More Than Just “Blood Thinners”

Anticoagulants, commonly known as blood thinners, are medications that help prevent dangerous blood clots from forming or growing. While they don't actually thin the blood, they play a critical role in protecting patients from serious health complications.

✨ Anticoagulants may be used for:
• Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
• Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
• Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
• Stroke prevention
• Certain heart valve conditions
• Clotting disorders and thrombophilia
• Post-surgical clot prevention

🩺 Common anticoagulant therapies include:
• Heparin
• Enoxaparin (Lovenox)
• Warfarin (Coumadin)
• Apixaban (Eliquis)
• Rivaroxaban (Xarelto)
• Dabigatran (Pradaxa)

The Importance of Proper Evaluation Anticoagulant therapy is not appropriate for every patient and should only be initiated after a thorough medical evaluation. Depending on the condition being assessed, providers may utilize diagnostic testing such as laboratory studies, ultrasound imaging, CT scans, echocardiograms, EKGs, or other specialized testing to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Focusing on only one area of the face and the problems with that... I use myself as the example.
