A comprehensive eye exam does much more than update your vision prescription.

Many serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal changes, develop gradually without pain or early symptoms. Annual comprehensive exams allow us to monitor your overall eye health and detect subtle changes long before they affect your daily vision.

If it has been over a year since your last visit, prioritize your eye health today.

Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, affects roughly two to three out of every hundred children according to the CDC, and it is the leading cause of vision loss in one eye among children. It develops when the brain begins favoring one eye and quietly tunes out the other. The child does not report anything wrong, because as far as they know, seeing has always looked like this.

Visual development runs through roughly age seven to eight, and treatment works best while those connections are still forming. Often it is as straightforward as glasses. Sometimes patching or drops. Caught late, some of the loss can be permanent.

A lot of people assume the optometrist-patient relationship ends when they walk out with their new glasses.

But frames shift, get sat on, dropped into bags, pushed up on your head a hundred times, and slowly they stop sitting where they were fitted to sit. When that happens, the optical center of the lens drifts off your line of sight, and glasses that felt perfect start feeling slightly wrong in a way that is hard to put a finger on.

Bring them in! Adjustments, nose pads, a look at whether something has gone out of alignment are simple fixes in office. Our care does not end at the purchase, and it has not since 1970.

Something gets in your eye. What you do?

For a chemical splash, flush immediately with clean water and keep flushing for at least fifteen minutes. Do not stop to read the bottle. Do not stop to make a call. Flush first, get help second.

For grit, sawdust, or a stray eyelash, blink several times and let your tears do the work. If that does not clear it, flush with eye safe saline or clean running water.

What not to do, in any case:
• Do not rub
• Do not press on the eye
• Never try to pull out anything that is stuck

Then have it looked at, even if it settles down. Metal, glass, and anything that was moving fast deserve needs same-day attention. For a chemical burn or a puncture, go straight to the emergency room.

For everything short of that, call us at 520-885-2052.

Today is World Sight Day.

The World Health Organization estimates that at least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with a near or distance vision impairment. For at least 1 billion of them, it either could have been prevented or has simply not been addressed yet.

The most common cause of vision impairment worldwide is uncorrected refractive error, which is the clinical way of saying someone needs glasses and does not have them.

If you are not sure whether you are covered, it is worth asking rather than assuming you are not. We accept most major vision plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Davis, Tricare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Spectera, UHC Vision, and MetLife.

October is Eye Injury Prevention Month, and most people guess wrong about where eye injuries happen.

About half of all eye injuries in the United States happen at home doing ordinary things: yard work, cleaning, home repair, cooking. Household chemicals alone account for roughly 125,000 eye injuries a year.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says protective eyewear cuts your risk of eye injury by about 90 percent, and recommends every household own at least one pair marked ANSI Z87.1. Only about three in ten people wear any eye protection during home projects.

One pair. Kept in the garage where you will actually reach for it.

Planning a costume that needs a different eye color? Start now, not the week of Halloween.

Every contact lens is a medical device, including the colored ones that do nothing at all for your vision.

The FDA is clear that selling them without a prescription is illegal, and warns specifically against buying from costume shops, novelty stores, gas stations, and beauty supply counters. Lenses from those places are not fitted to the curve of your eye and are not held to the same standards.
Reported injuries include corneal ulcers, infections, swelling, and lasting vision problems.

We carry prescription colored contact lenses. Getting them the right way means an exam, a proper fit, and lenses from a manufacturer that follows health and compliance criteria.

The reason to move now is timing. If you have never worn contacts, the path from exam to lenses in hand generally runs two to four weeks once you factor in the fitting and the trial period. Halloween is October 31.

Most people leave an eye exam having asked nothing. Then they think of three questions in the parking lot.

Worth asking while you are in the chair:

Did anything change since last time, and by how much?

Is there anything in my family history I should be watching for?

Given my work and screen habits, would a different lens option actually help me?

How is the health of my retina and optic nerve, not just my prescription?

Ask them. The one on one attention we give each patient is the thing we hear about most from our patients, and it is not much use if you feel rushed out the door. We have been doing this in Tucson since 1970 and we would rather answer the question than have you wonder about it.

Low vision means vision loss that glasses, contacts, or surgery cannot fully correct. It often comes from conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic eye disease.

What a lot of people do not realize is how much can still be done. Magnification, specialized lenses, better task lighting, high contrast tools, and changes to how a room is set up can restore a great deal of independence, especially for reading, cooking, and getting around the house.

The goal shifts from correcting vision to making the remaining vision work as hard as possible. That is a real difference in daily life.

If this is your situation or a family member's, come talk to us. 520-885-2052.

Nobody's favorite part of the visit, so here is why it is worth it.

Your pupil is a small opening. Looking through it undilated is like trying to survey a room through a keyhole. Dilating drops widen the pupil so we can see a wide view of the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye, which is exactly where glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal tears, and the eye signs of diabetes and high blood pressure show up first.

What to expect after. Light sensitivity and blurry near vision for a few hours. Bring sunglasses. If you are sensitive to it, consider having someone drive you, or plan the appointment around your day.

A few hours of blur for a clear look at the back of your eye is a fair trade.
