Please help us welcome Dr. Nicholas Jonas to our General Surgery team!

Dr. Jonas joins the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson Department of Surgery as a Clinical Assistant Professor. He's a board-certified general surgeon with specialized training in minimally invasive, robotic, and weight-loss (bariatric) surgery.

Dr. Jonas trained at Tufts University and NewYork-Presbyterian, and completed his fellowship right here with us, so it's great to have him back in Tucson! He's an award-winning teacher who enjoys training the next generation of surgeons, and before medicine he served our country in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Join us for Grand Rounds this Wednesday as we welcome guest speaker, Chris Sonnenday, MD, MHS from University of Michigan Health!

Dr. Sonnenday is the Darrell A. Campbell, Jr., M.D., Collegiate Professor of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan and Transplant Center Director for University of Michigan Health. His clinical practice focuses on liver transplantation, including living donor liver transplantation, and on the surgical treatment of cancers of the liver, bile duct, and pancreas.

We're excited to welcome Dr. Susan Rowell as the new Chief of our Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burn, and Acute Care Surgery! 🎉

Dr. Rowell joins us from the University of Chicago, bringing 20 years of experience caring for severely injured and critically ill patients. She's a nationally recognized expert in traumatic brain injury, and her research has changed how patients are cared for after serious injury. She led an international trial showing that giving the medication tranexamic acid (TXA) before patients reach the hospital improved survival for people with bleeding in the brain after trauma, a finding now reflected in guidelines worldwide.

Our department is thrilled to have her leading our trauma program into its next chapter.

Welcome to the team, Dr. Jocelyn Di Nolfi! 🎉

Dr. Di Nolfi joins us this month as a colon and re**al surgeon at BUMC-T and Assistant Clinical Professor in our Department of Surgical Oncology.

She cares for patients with the full spectrum of colore**al diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, colore**al cancer, diverticular disease and anore**al disorders.

Dr. Di Nolfi earned her medical degree at the UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, completed her residency at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and completed her fellowship in colon and re**al surgery at the University of Utah.

An Arizona native, she's thrilled to be back home. When she's not in the clinic, she loves hiking, discovering new restaurants and local spots, reading and spending time with her family.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mohammad Khreiss on his new leadership role!

Dr. Khreiss has been appointed vice chair for clinical operations, effective September 1, 2026.

A surgical oncologist specializing in cancers of the pancreas, liver, biliary system and stomach, he will now lead the department's physician outreach, community engagement and strategic partnerships, helping expand access to surgical care throughout Southern Arizona.
