Can I let you in on a little secret? 👀
Most massage therapists really don’t like being called a “masseuse.”
And before you panic if you’ve said it before—we know most people don’t mean anything by it! 🤍
So why does it matter?
The term masseuse is actually a French word that simply means a female massage practitioner. Over time, however, the term became associated with unlicensed practitioners and, unfortunately, has been linked to stereotypes that don’t accurately represent the massage therapy profession.
Today, massage therapists complete education, training, licensing requirements, continuing education, and professional standards to provide therapeutic care for their clients.
That’s why many of us prefer to be called:
✨ Massage Therapist
✨ Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
Those titles reflect the training, professionalism, and healthcare-focused work that we do every day.
At the end of the day, most massage therapists aren’t offended if you didn’t know the difference. We just appreciate when people understand that massage therapy is a skilled profession and that the title matters. 🤍
So next time you’re talking about your favorite massage therapist, skip the “masseuse” and show them a little extra love by calling them what they worked hard to become. 💆🏽♀️✨
