Red ribbon week starts today. theme's "make a difference, be a hero, stay drug free," so here's a hero move most people don't know about: naloxone, the nasal spray narcan, reverses an opioid overdose, it's over the counter now, and anyone can carry it. you don't have to use anything to be the person who's ready if someone around you needs help. wear red, and know where to get it.

One fact that reframes the teen w**d conversation: starting young matters a lot. People who begin using cannabis in their teens are several times more likely to develop a use disorder than those who start as adults, because the brain's reward and decision-making circuits are still forming. That is not a reason to panic. It is a reason to keep the door open and keep talking before it becomes a habit.

A myth worth retiring: that letting teens drink at home teaches them to handle it. The research points the other way. Kids whose parents allow them to drink tend to move faster from that first drink to heavier patterns like binge drinking. What actually shapes healthy choices is the ordinary stuff, regular conversations and modeling it yourself. The permission is the part that backfires.

Today is indigenous peoples' day, and hispanic heritage month is wrapping up.

here's the throughline: knowing where you come from is protective. roots, elders, the people who've got you, the food that shows up when things get hard. that belonging is real mental health support, not a side thing. lean into it. Teen Lifeline, call or text 520-327-8336, 3 to 9pm daily.

The "w**d isn't addictive" line is outdated. about 3 in 10 people who use it end up with cannabis use disorder, meaning they keep using even when it's messing things up and struggle to stop. and starting young stacks the odds a lot higher. not a lecture, just the part that usually gets left out.

World mental health day is tomorrow, so a quick one for you, not for someone else. when did you last actually check in with yourself? not "i'm fine" on autopilot, but real. resting counts. asking for help counts. you're allowed to not be okay, and you're allowed to tell someone.

Teen Lifeline, call or text 520-327-8336, 3 to 9pm daily. 988, call or text 988, 24/7.
