🍦 I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! 🍦

Our Memory Care residents recently enjoyed a sweet outing to Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, where smiles were as plentiful as the scoops! Founded in Youngstown, Ohio in 1945 by Alice Handel, Handel’s has been delighting guests with homemade ice cream made from fresh ingredients for more than 80 years. What began as a neighborhood favorite has grown into a beloved ice cream destination across the country.

We were excited to visit Tucson’s own Handel’s location, which opened in October, 2024 and has quickly become a local favorite.

Residents enjoyed choosing from a wide variety of flavors, from timeless classics like chocolate and mint chocolate chip to unique favorites such as horchata and strawberry cheesecake. 🍓🍫 The best part was gathering together to enjoy our treats, share stories, compare flavors, and savor the simple joy of a community outing. There’s something special about sharing ice cream with friends, and this sweet adventure created memories that will last long after the last scoop was gone! 💙

Residents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of creativity and connection as they gathered together to craft colorful paper flowers inspired by traditions that have been passed down through generations. 🎨✨ Our latest community outing took us on a journey through the rich history and beauty of Native art at the Maynard Dixon Museum and Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery. From traditional masterpieces to contemporary works, these spaces offered a stunning celebration of Indigenous creativity and culture.

One of our group's favorite discoveries was the intricate beaded Native pottery, showcasing incredible artistry and craftsmanship. 🏺✨

🤠 Western Trivia: Did you know that famed Western artist Maynard Dixon and renowned photographer Ansel Adams were close friends? Their shared love of the American West helped shape some of the most iconic images and artwork of the region.

Learning, Conservation & Connection 🐆🌎
Earlier this month, we had the privilege of welcoming Allison Kreis, Co-Director of La Tierra del Jaguar, to our community for an engaging and meaningful presentation about the organization’s conservation efforts.

Allison shared insight into the important work being done to protect jaguars, their habitats, and the ecosystems and communities that surround them. Our members listened with curiosity, asked thoughtful questions, and came away with a deeper understanding of both the challenges facing these remarkable animals and the dedicated efforts underway to protect them.

We are grateful to Allison for sharing her knowledge, experiences, and passion with us. Opportunities like this remind us that learning keeps us connected—not only to one another, but to the larger world we all share. 🐾💚

A Happy Hour to remember!
Residents were treated to an exciting afternoon of Middle Eastern dance performances, cultural history, and meaningful conversation thanks to our community partner, Kelsey from Bayada. As residents shared stories from their travels and personal experiences with this dance style, the room was filled with connection and laughter.

The afternoon held a wonderful surprise when Michele, our Resident Engagement Director, joined in for a duet performance! Her previous experience with this art form was on full display, earning applause and admiration from the audience. As our fitness instructor, Michele regularly encourages residents in their wellness goals, and it was inspiring to see her expression that same passion through dance.

And of course, thank you to our Kitchen team for creating a delicious Middle Eastern menu that completed the experience.

A social video series called Like Old Times is helping older adults revisit hobbies, passions and experiences they haven't enjoyed in years, from returning to the baseball diamond to reconnecting with longtime interests.

It's a beautiful reminder that the things we love don't have an expiration date.

Our latest community outing took us to the University of Arizona’s Center for Creative Photography to experience Animality: 100 Years of Photographs—and we had the added treat of visiting during the exhibition’s very first week! Animality opened August 8 and will be on view through December 12.

Featuring more than 100 photographs and archival objects spanning a century, the exhibition explores the many ways humans and animals share space, connection, curiosity—and even a little humor. From furry and feathered to finned and wonderfully unexpected, there was plenty to look at, talk about, and think about.

We especially loved learning that Animality was created in collaboration with University of Arizona honors students studying human-animal relationships, bringing together art, science, history, and a new generation of perspectives.

A very special thank you to our tour guides, Kenzie and Valeria, who were incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout our visit. They made an already fascinating morning even more enjoyable.

Another wonderful morning spent out in our Tucson community—staying curious, learning something new, and experiencing it together. 💛📷🐾
