☀️ HEAT EXHAUSTION & IV HYDRATION: WHEN FLUID REPLACEMENT MATTERS

Heat exhaustion can develop when the body loses too much water and electrolytes through prolonged heat exposure and heavy sweating.

Common warning signs include:

• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Headache
• Weakness or unusual fatigue
• Muscle cramps
• Nausea
• Rapid pulse
• Cool, clammy skin

💧 Where does IV hydration fit in?

For mild dehydration, oral fluids and electrolytes may be enough. But when dehydration is more significant, or nausea, vomiting, weakness, or poor oral intake makes drinking difficult, clinically appropriate IV fluids can provide rapid fluid and electrolyte replacement under medical supervision.

IV hydration may help restore circulating fluid volume and support recovery, but it is not a substitute for emergency treatment when heat stroke is suspected.

🚨 Confusion, collapse, seizures, severe neurologic symptoms, or a core temperature around 104°F or higher may indicate heat stroke. Call 911 immediately.

The goal is not simply to “get an IV.” The goal is to recognize dehydration early, assess severity, replace fluids appropriately, and prevent progression to a medical emergency.

Stay cool. Hydrate early. Know the warning signs.

A middle-aged gentleman recently came to the clinic to ask whether we could manage his blood pressure concerns. He has a habit of not going to the doctor. He does not manage his health well. He eats junk food and does not exercise.
