In 2019, I had the opportunity to attend the annual Neuroscience Symposium at the hospital I was working at where I learned enough to make my head hurt!

We lose 2 million neurons for every minute of oxygen deprivation?😳 I knew time is brain but I didn’t realize it was THAT much brain THAT fast!

I loved the opportunity to learn all things neuro, but my absolute favorite was listening to , Dr. May Nour, who later joined me for a live to show off the Mobile Stroke Unit!

Talk about a badass, genius, life-saving, world-changing woman! I felt ALIVE after listening to her speak with so much enthusiasm and brilliance. She’s part of the team that’s bringing to stroke unit to the patient, literally. Their unit has CT/CTA capabilities, meets the patient where ever they may be, and allows them to cut the time from last known well to tPA initiation SIGNIFICANTLY and get patients directly from their unit to the angio suite for a thrombectomy, if needed. We all know that TIME IS BRAIN! This is HUGE for these patients!

After my dad’s stroke that same year, I learned from a personal perspective how stressful it can be when the clock is ticking and you have to wait for the ambulance and then wait for the helicopter and then wait for anything else that may be an obstacle between the patient and the hospital. I waited 3 hours from the time my dad’s symptoms started until I got to lay eyes on him in my hospital. Not only did he continue to lose neurons, I’m pretty sure those three hours shaved a few years off of my life! 😩😬😫

Advances in medicine, like the Mobile Stroke Unit, will NEVER stop amazing me! And women like Dr. Nour are at the forefront!

Join me in spreading awareness about stroke this month!

So, we all know the signs of stroke and what to do, right? Are you certain that those you love would know them too? And actually call for help? I encourage all of you to make SURE, without a doubt that your family and friends know. It just might save their life.

When I was working at the hospital in Tulsa, I got the call that no daughter wants to get, “Sarah, we think your dad is having a stroke.” I’d been afraid of getting a call like that for the majority of my life.

To say that I’m terrified to answer my phone is an understatement. There have been so many of my family members in the hospital over the last 18 months, and not all of them have made it out alive.

Because he acted as soon as he noticed symptoms, my dad ended up making a full recovery.

His arm, face, and leg were numb and he wasn’t able to move his arm. He also had slurred speech but managed to call my sister who called 911 for him when she realized what he was trying to say. He was life-flighted to the hospital where I work (thank you, Lord!) since he lives in a very rural area. He made it with about 45 minutes left to get tPA (the “clot buster” drug.)

I am SO THANKFUL that we had talked about these signs and how vital it is to not wait, but act immediately. And that he actually did! (Anybody else have a stubborn parent?)

My pops was discharged a few days later and got to go back to living his normal life. I’m so thankful that I was given 2 more years with him after that. Time is truly our most precious and scarce resource. You'll always wish for more of it.

Apraxia has always been one of the most fascinating diagnoses that I've gotten to work with. From my kiddos in the schools to my adults in the hospital, the motor planning component just clicks with my brain.

I didn't learn a ton about apraxia in grad school but had a phenomenal presenter, Lonnie Harris, who made the lightbulb go on for me during my CF. It's been one of my favorite diagnoses ever since!

Working with CAS prepared me for the adults that I would see in the hospital with apraxia and helped me understand the relationship of co-articulation. I could nerd out on it all day, but...

There is still SO much room for the awareness surrounding apraxia to grow. So, share this carousel with a friend or colleague to spread awareness today!

I will be the first to tell you, I’m the biggest fan of this field. But I’d be lying if I told you I always love being an SLP or am even always proud to be an SLP.

Not feeling “super Speechie” and pumped to go to work every day does not make you a bad person or a bad SLP.

Not feeling super pumped about National Speech-Language-Hearing Month or SLP Day, also does not make you a bad SLP.

It probably is a good indicator you need to spend some time doing other things that bring you joy to recharge because our work is heavy and really hard sometimes.

So, this is your Friday night reminder to do better than me at balancing and taking care of you. I know this is important the same as you do, so why the hell is it so hard?

Tomorrow, I’m forcing myself to unplug, read a book, watch the sunset, and listen to the waves (probably with some champagne and avo toast in there somewhere.)

Sending you love and peace. 💕

I am immensely grateful to live in a time that talking about mental health isn't as taboo as it once was. I genuinely believe that this shift has saved lives.

I have dealt with depression and anxiety since I was a teen. And after the traumatic experience of losing my mom, performing CPR on her until EMS could get to us, and the many horrific detail of that day that I will never forget, I was diagnosed with PTSD.

I was also diagnosed with ADHD at 32 (a little late to the game on that one!) and the more I learn about mental health, the more I realize just how connect it all truly is.

I have no shame in talking about these diagnoses or that I take medication to make me more myself. Or that I go to therapy every Tuesday morning to help me live a more balanced life and more boldly as myself.

🙌I KNOW that I am only able to share so freely and openly because others before me shared when it was taboo and when it was considered shameful.

💕In the same sense, sharing my uncensored truth holds space for others to do the same. For that reason alone, I will never stop sharing it.

👏Together, we can

💌Share this post with friends and talk about mental health with them today. You never know whose life you might be changing or even saving.

Teachers truly are some of the MOST impactful people in the lives of little humans. They are shaping the future we will all live in.

Teachers most definitely don't get the appreciation, respect, and compensation they deserve. Join me in showing some appreciation and recognition for them today and let your school board know that you !

Tag your teacher friends in the comments to show them some love! And don't forget... teachers don't want an apple, they want adequate pay and appropriate classroom sizes! (why is this still not the standard?!)
