Do you know the warning signs of a blood clot?

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), affects approximately 900,000 people in the U.S. each year. Recognizing the warning signs and seeking prompt medical attention can save lives.

In 2025, Oklahoma Heart Institute’s Blood Clot Team consulted on 1,000 patients with VTE, providing advanced therapies to more than 300 patients with complex cases.

“Listen to your body. Know the warning signs of VTE and the risk factors that make you susceptible, and don’t wait to seek help,” says Dr. Stanley Zimmerman. “Early recognition and prompt treatment can save lives and lead to better outcomes.”

Big news for Oklahoma Heart Institute! ❤️

Oklahoma Heart Institute has earned a prestigious 3-Star Rating, the highest possible designation, from the STS/ACC TVT National Registry for its Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) program.

This recognition places OHI among the top-performing TAVR programs in the nation and makes it the only publicly reported 3-Star TAVR program in Oklahoma.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that helps patients with aortic stenosis receive lifesaving valve treatment without traditional open-heart surgery. This achievement reflects the expertise, teamwork and commitment of our physicians, nurses and clinical staff who deliver exceptional care every day.

“Patients should not have to travel far from home to receive exceptional heart care. This rating shows they can find nationally recognized expertise and outcomes at Oklahoma Heart Institute,” said Dr. Kamran Muhammad, Director of OHI’s Structural Heart Program.

For patients with advanced heart failure, an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) can be a lifesaving treatment. One of the challenges following LVAD surgery, however, is potential right-heart failure during recovery.

Dr. Ajit Tharakan and his colleagues at the Oklahoma Heart Institute recently published research highlighting an innovative approach called the Tharakan-Ventricular Assist Device (T-VAD), a temporary support strategy designed to help the right side of the heart recover after surgery.

The study reported encouraging results, with 95% of patients who received T-VAD support alive at follow-up, underscoring the potential of this approach to improve outcomes for patients facing complex heart conditions.

We are proud to see Dr. Tharakan and our cardiovascular team contributing to research that advances the field of heart failure care and helps shape the future of treatment for patients across our region.

This distinction recognizes institutions that meet rigorous standards for pulmonary embolism care and demonstrate excellence in patient outcomes, innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care.

We are proud to remain Oklahoma's only Comprehensive Pulmonary Embolism Center of Excellence. This achievement reflects the dedication of the entire team whose commitment to excellence is the foundation of our success.

Additionally, Oklahoma Heart Institute was recently accepted into the PERT Consortium® PRISM Program, a global initiative focused on data-driven quality improvement, research and advancing standards of PE care.

Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month is the perfect time to highlight the innovative care provided by the electrophysiology team at Oklahoma Heart Institute.

Our team has been at the forefront of adopting advanced technologies and procedures to diagnose and treat AFib, including many firsts in Tulsa:

✅ Concomitant AFib ablation + Watchman™ procedures, when clinically appropriate
✅ Reached 1,000 Watchman™ procedures
✅ Introduced the FARAVIEW™ focal catheter for non-thermal ablation
✅ Introduced FARAPULSE™ Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) to treat AFib in March 2024
✅ Implanted a Micra™ leadless pacemaker in 2017
✅ First in Oklahoma to use cryoablation to treat AFib in 2011

In 2025, we performed 562 AFib ablations. Through August 2026, we've already performed 526, an average of approximately 66 per month.
