Recently, OU-Tulsa hosted its annual OU School of Community Medicine (OUSCM) Institute. For four days of immersive programming, students and faculty across academic disciplines learned alongside each other, gaining valuable insight into Oklahoma’s healthcare ecosystem. Participants connected with local medical professionals, patients and providers and engaged in real-world simulations.

The School of Community Medicine focuses on the health of northeast Oklahomans in underserved, urban and rural areas. By educating and training medical students, the college is building a healthcare network dedicated to improving the health of individuals and their communities.

There’s no better way to learn about Tulsa than by getting out into the community! 🚌✨

As part of SCM Institute, our new students took a bus tour through Tulsa to learn more about the history, landmarks, local businesses, hospitals, and communities that make our city what it is. Along the way, we visited the Greenwood District and John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, where we learned more about the history of the Tulsa Race Massacre and had the opportunity to reflect and debrief together.

We also got to meet up with our car groups and share lunch with the small groups we spent the week getting to know!

The bus tour is such an important part of SCM Institute because it gives our students the chance to build relationships with one another while also better understanding the history and community they’ll be learning from and serving throughout medical school.

SCM Institute 2026 has officially reached the end of the road! 🛣️✨

With Route 66 as our theme, our newest SCM students spent the week learning about Tulsa’s history, exploring what it truly means to practice community medicine, and putting it all into action through advocacy projects for their assigned patients.

From laughs and tears to serious conversations, reflection, and plenty of growth, this week reminded us that becoming a great healthcare provider is about so much more than what happens in the classroom. ❤️

We can’t wait to see where the road takes our new students, and how they use what they learned at Institute to become thoughtful, compassionate, community-centered healthcare providers.
