The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program

The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program We are a 16/16/16 program at The University of Alabama that prepares physicians to improve and promote the health of others.

The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency is one of the largest and most successful residencies in the southeast. We are the only residency at the 658-bed community hospital that is the referral hospital for West Alabama. We are a 16/16/16 unopposed program with a large, full-time faculty that is assisted by numerous local physician volunteers. We emphasize areas including rural medicine

, obstetrics and sports medicine. The residency is operated by The University of Alabama's College of Community Health Sciences, which also functions as a regional campus of the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

A familiar face, with a new chapter!

Originally from Phenix City, Alabama, Dr. Alesha Amerson earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Alabama and her medical degree from the UAB Heersink School of Medicine - Tuscaloosa campus before completing residency here at UATFMR. We are excited to support Dr. Amerson as she continues her training and advances her expertise as our 2026-2027 Geriatric Medicine Fellow!

Outside of medicine, she enjoys dancing, gardening, and spending time with her family.

From medical student to resident to fellow, we’ve been proud to watch Dr. Amerson grow throughout her training and are excited to see all she will accomplish in the year ahead!

A lasting impact, a treasured legacy, and a life remembered.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dr. John Brandon, a beloved physician, educator, and champion for rural healthcare.

Dr. Brandon dedicated his life to serving others as a primary care physician in a small rural community, where his compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his patients made a lasting impact. Through his role as Medical Director of The University of Alabama Rural Medical Scholars Program, he mentored and inspired countless future physicians, helping shape generations of healthcare leaders committed to serving rural communities.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to rural health and medical education, the Rural Medical Scholars Program proudly renamed its annual Sage Award to the Dr. John Brandon Award in 2026, an honor that reflects the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Brandon's family, friends, former colleagues, students, and all whose lives he touched. His legacy will live on through the many physicians he mentored and the countless rural communities that continue to benefit from his life's work.
