Can a simple nutrient deficiency be the hidden link behind bedwetting? ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘‡

A recent cross-sectional study highlighted a powerful connection between Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (PNE) and the nervous system. The research found that children with PNE had significantly lower serum levels of Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and folate compared to healthy controls.

Even more fascinating: these lower nutrient levels directly associated with neurophysiological markers of delayed cortical maturation and autonomic dysregulation.

As chiropractors, our focus is always on optimal nervous system function, communication, and development. When the brain and bladder aren't communicating properly, we must look at the whole pictureโ€”including the metabolic fuel driving that development. In these cases, I always start with the spine first. We scope the spine, assess motion, check orthopedics , correlate with history, order images if necessary, and make the determination to adjust subluxation if present or start with nutritional counseling. Not every story is the same.

I have found this research and approach incredibly relevant in several cases in my own clinic recently.

Because sublingual Vitamin B absorbs at levels comparable to IV administration, we have been able to see great positive changes in these pediatric cases with a simple, safe, and cost-effective solution.

However, the puzzle doesn't stop at supplementation. It is vital for clinicians to assess family history and explore genetic testing. For instance, MTHFR mutations heavily impact how a child processes these exact nutrients. If a patient cannot absorb or utilize Vitamin B correctly, it can trigger complex, frustrating symptomsโ€”all stemming from a root cause that actually has a very straightforward solution.

Let's look beyond the symptoms and keep supporting neurodevelopment from the inside out. ๐Ÿš€

"I want chocolate milk."

When research meets the road in clinical care, amazing things happen. Lately, Iโ€™ve been diving deep into genomics, methylated vitamins, and neurological development. During my reading, I came across an eye-opening article in Pharmacy Times about when "Autism Isn't Autism." Immediately, several of our current cases leaped to mind.

Pediatric vitamin B12 deficiency is frequently misdiagnosed as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in young children. Because standard serum blood tests look at blood levels rather than cellular absorption, these deep cellular deficiencies are easily missed outright. It is well-documented that B12 deficiency can cause severe developmental delays, hypotonia, tremors, seizures, failure to thrive, speech lag, and intense irritability.

Children experiencing this exhibit profound language and social delays (the "good" or unusually quiet baby), behavioral struggles like anger or elopement, and gross motor delays (like being a late crawler or walker). Sadly, these symptoms are easily grouped away under the umbrella diagnosis of Autism and comorbidities are not explored in any efficient manner.

Remarkably, MRI scans reveal that the brain atrophy commonly seen in these severe deficiency cases actually REVERSES after high-dose B12 therapy. Even better, research shows oral or sublingual supplementation can be just as comparable and effective as painful, expensive, and time consuming IV administration.

We recently completed 10 visits with a 4-year-old child in our chiropractic clinic. He was completely non-verbal, lacked focus, and would not engage with anyone. He had already spent a year in speech and physical therapy with minimal shifts. His family values whole foods, but his body needed specific support.

Our initial 3 visits focused purely on gentle spinal adjustments utilizing the Gonstead System and SOT-based cranial massage. Within those three sessions, he began making direct eye contact and focusing on individual tasks. Next, we introduced targeted home nutritional support, including sublingual liquid methylated B-complex vitamins.

By visit 6, he was using simple words, playing intentionally, and showing less elopement. At his 10-visit re-evaluation, his mother shared the best news: he spoke his very first complete sentence. "I want chocolate milk." Never were sweeter words heard.

Everyone thinks chiropractors just fix backs. In reality, it is SO much more. Our education stands on the Three T's of why a body breaks down: Traumas (biomechanics), Thoughts (mental health), and Toxins (nutrition). We might seem eccentric to outsiders, but as clinicians, it is our job to think outside the box. When you look at the whole picture, a child's life changes.

Every good gift is from Above. โœจ
