Children often choose to play with guns, darts, and knives in their play.

Understandably, parents and guardians can feel concerned if their children play with these items, especially if they may be playing out scenes of aggression, revenge, violence or death.

In a child-centered relationship with children we non-judgementally and authentically need to allow children to express their innermost needs, fears, thoughts through providing toys that are present in our client's world.

Play is only limited to the extent to keep clients grounded in reality (I.e. I'm not for hurting, they aren't for hurting and toys aren't for breaking).

So yes, in here you can choose to shoot the dart gun at my ceiling the entire session, you can choose to make me "d!e", you can choose to use the toys in almost any way you need to.

Allowing children to express feelings and needs using aggressive toys actually helps them to understand their feelings, engage in impulse control and move towards the truest version of themselves, versus becoming more aggressive.

Handcuffs are frequently used in my playroom. We keep in mind that the child understands their play best and is expressing what they need to and that all play is meaningful.

Sometimes we may hypothesize about meanings of play or the particular function of a toy for that child. However, children may play with the same toy in a similar way and it could mean very different things.

Here's a few possible reasons why children may choose to play with handcuffs. What other meanings have you seen in your playroom or home?

While Play can be literal and express experiences that children have gone through (i.e. seeing a parent get arrested/police violence) Play is also fantastical, symbolic and imaginative. Often caregivers can be alarmed by children playing with "aggressive" toys or violent scenes, and although this is understandable it is important to remember that just because a child plays something, this doesn't automatically mean the way that our adult brain would understand this experience.

In Play Therapy we give children the space and relationship to express what they need. We understand that toys are the children's words.

It is a profound honor to love and care for our clients and their families. 💗

I love being able to share food and drink with all who pass through my doors (and I love a good snack myself!)

I attended a virtual (all parent focused!) EMDR training today. I am excited to be trained in GPEP (Group Parent Episode Protocol) and Parenting Wheel, created by Ana Gómez. I'm dreaming of various options ways to bring this material to clients.

As I don't have (human) children, I used my experiences as a fur parent during practice sessions, which was more insightful than I could have predicted. It's fascinating how our unprocessed and unintegrated "stuff" is unknowingly activated and gets into dances with other people's (and our most loved fur children and children) and can become part of our children's inner working model of attachment experiences, sense of self and beliefs about themselves and others.

So, as always, continuously being aware of our stuff and working to heal it is amazing, life changing work for ourselves, our children and our community. The work you are doing is sacred, generational work. ❤️

This isn't therapy but please reach out to a therapist if you'd like to begin!

Last night I attended a wonderful presentation on overdose prevention by South Central Public Health District.
I learned a lot of valuable information and feel more comfortable knowing how and when to give Narcan- and I got these cute kit for free! 🥰

I have never considered how easily anyone- even pets- could overdose on opioids, even people who are not using these substances. Someone could unknowingly touch something contaminated and then eat or drink, touch their nose/eyes etc and this could lead to an overdose. Having this information and medication is so powerful.

Please reach out to South Central Public Health District if you'd like to request a free presentation for your organization, I truly believe everyone needs this lifesaving information.

We take care of us. Harm reduction saves lives. 🖤

I hope it's always funny to me to clean small furniture 😂
