New research shows speech and swallowing changes can show up as much as a decade before a Parkinson’s diagnosis is ever made.

By the time tremor or stiffness gets someone in the door, speech and swallowing have often already been changing for years, quietly.

A softer voice.

Getting asked to repeat yourself.

Coughing more at meals.

Easy to explain away.

Easy to miss.

Neurology is tracking movement and medication.

Nobody’s usually tracking the voice getting quieter at the dinner table.

That’s the gap we treat.

The window to protect function is now, not after swallowing gets scary or speech becomes hard to understand.

Proactive care means staying at the table, in the conversation, and in control of your life, longer.

New post is live:
“The Early Gap in Parkinson’s Speech Care.” link in bio, or head to ssnrtx.com/blog.

If you or someone you love has Parkinson’s and hasn’t had a speech and swallowing evaluation yet, that’s exactly why we’re here.

sustainable productivity
clinical support & team meetings
PTO
paid TX state license & ASHA dues
a private office & work computer

If you’re an SLP who wants to help people eat, drink, speak, and think and wants a workplace that supports you while you do it, we’d love to hear from you.

Who should apply:
Adult medical SLPs comfortable with or eager to grow into dysphagia and neurogenic communication care (stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, TBI).

CFs get strong, hands-on mentorship toward CCCs.

Your voice deserves to be heard. 🗣️
If you’ve completed the SPEAK OUT! therapy program by the Parkinson Voice Project this one’s for you.

After putting in the work in therapy, building a louder, clearer, more intentional voice, the SPEAK OUT! Weekly Group is how you keep it.

Every Wednesday from 4–4:30 PM, SPEAKOUT! graduates come together to practice, maintain, and protect the voice they fought hard to find.

And the best part? It’s completely free for those who have completed the program. Parkinson’s doesn’t stop and neither should you.

This group exists because maintenance matters. Because the work you did in therapy deserves to stick.

Ever notice your voice sounds harsh or hoarse? Maybe it feels scratchy or gets raspy when you overuse it or don't rest?

Good vocal hygiene can help reduce strain, support vocal endurance, and keep your voice functioning at its best.

A few of our favorite strategies to help our voice sound and feel its best include
- Staying well hydrated
- Limiting alcohol and caffeine
- Avoiding smoking or environmental irritants
- Reducing throat clearing
- Resting your voice after long periods of talking
- Using a controlled speaking volume instead of shouting or whispering
- Your sleep, reflux management, posture, and breath support also play an important role in overall vocal wellness.

Small daily habits can make a big difference in protecting your voice.

If you have noticed your voice sounds more harsh, hoarse, breathy, raspy, quiet, or strained, voice therapy can help you sound like yourself again.

Call our office today to schedule a voice evaluation so you can sound like you again

05/25/2026

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain, most commonly from stroke, traumatic brain injury, or progressive neurological disorders.

It can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, or write.

Common signs include:
• Word-finding difficulty
• Trouble understanding conversation
• Difficulty reading or spelling
Aphasia does NOT affect intelligence.

If you or a loved one are experiencing communication changes, speech therapy can help.

Schedule an aphasia evaluation to learn strategies that can help make communication easier in daily life. You can also join our Aphasia Communication Group to practice conversation and connect with others who understand what you’re going through.
