I am a speech language pathologist. I have practiced for 43 years. I have been a private practice owner for 26 years. I love my job and it’s a rewarding profession. However, in the 26 years I’ve had my own practice. I have seen a steady decline in what SLP‘s are being paid for their services. In 26 years, the reimbursements for my services have gone down significantly. All the while expenses, as you know, have gone up across the board for everything from food, to utilities, supplies, equipment, etc. Now CMS, who sets the rates for medical reimbursements, is planning on decreasing that rate significantly in 2027. Major changes are coming in for the practice of speech therapy. This is now just about how much money we make for our hard work; affects access to health care service for you and the people you love. What this means is that private practices like mine may no longer be able to afford keeping our doors open. Waitlists for services already exist and will get even longer when fewer SLPs can afford to stay in the profession.
But you can help. A grassroots effort is working to sway CMS and stop the rate decrease. You can write a letter which the SPEAK project will deliver to Congress. The’ve made it easy.
