One of my favorite common yet useful tools in massage is ✨hot stones.✨

Other than feeling amazing, they have other benefits.

They soften tissue incredibly quick, boost relaxation and nervous system resets quickly, and improve circulation.

I love to utilize hot stones in multiple ways, but this recording specifically was to focus on the nervous system and here’s how…👇

Our nervous systems are contralaterally wired, which means the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa.

My intention behind using the stones on the right side of the back and the left arm is the connect both sides of the brain.

Which influences relaxation -

Which then influences “theta” brain waves (which is where the natural healing in your body kicks in) and the ultimate relaxation half asleep half awake sensation begins!

This is especially useful for:
👉overthinkers
👉people who struggle with relaxing
👉overstimulation
👉anxiety
👉ADD/ADHD
and more!

There are so many reasons why the ribs should be addressed regularly in bodywork sessions.

👉 Sleep apnea
👉 Asthma
👉 Longterm smoking
👉 Shoulder pain
👉 Clavicle pain
👉 Hip pain
👉 Pregnancy
👉 Postpartum
👉 Abdominal surgery
👉 Stored trauma
👉 And more!

I’m just listing off all the reasons I have worked through a client’s ribs personally and found results.

There’s so much that we carry in our ribs!

After I turned off the recording, I also worked down her sternum with some active release techniques, and did anterior (front of ribs) rib work, diaphragm pressure points, and abdominal work.

She left feeling like she could take a deep breath again and found a lot of pain was relieved!

I love this work, rib work is one of the most underrated work with the most lasting results.

There’s few pains worse than jaw pain.

I know this from experience, as I spent 6 years of my life in chronic day in and day out pain all stemming from my jaw.

This led to two jaw surgeries which had really painful and month long recoveries.

I had absolutely no clue that there was bodywork you could receive that would help with TMJ dysfunction! Whether you’ve had jaw surgeries or not, your quality of life can improve drastically when you get bodywork done by a professional who has been trained in TMJ related issues.

I’m so excited to announce that my books have officially been opened up to start taking TMJ clients at Relax Lab! After 3 weeks of training with Laura Barton Hoyt and getting feedback and tips from her and Alex Stansbury (another very skilled TMJ therapist at Relax Lab) I feel confident and ready to serve my clients in this way!

These sessions include a lot of attention to the neck and face muscles. I’ve also been trained in how to go straight to the source and approach the jaw from inside the mouth.

If you experience pain coming from your jaw or headaches stemming from clenching your jaw, jaw clicking, and tightness you would most likely find our TMJ sessions highly beneficial to your quality of life.

I hope to see you there. 💖

The erector spinae group of muscles are so prevalent and something I often focus in on in the beginning of every massage.

These are the postural muscles on either side of the spine. There’s 3 of them, but they are usually grouped in together when spoken about.

As you can see, the longest one, called the “longissimus” connects your hips to your neck. This is one of many ways that show how shoulder and hip health are correlated!

I’ve found a lot of times that mid back pain is the erectors flaring up. But a cool thing about mid back pain is that it also indicates that the person experiencing pain may need diaphragm work. Which is another story for another time!

The erectors are also very affected by people with conditions like scoliosis! I’ve now worked with two different people with severe scoliosis and have seen really awesome results.

If you’re experiencing mid back pain, come see me! I’d love to work together with you on what feels relevant to your pain. Let’s make a treatment plan together to give you a better quality of life.

One of the muscles that I often find to be related to headaches in my clients is the levator scapulae.

It originates from the first 4 vertebrae and inserts on the inside corner of the scapula.

The action of this muscle is to elevate the scapula and tilt the head. You use this muscle every day, all day long. This muscle also carries a lot of stress alongside the upper traps.

I’ve discovered ways over time to really work with this muscle and have seen great results in my regulars, and even people who just come for a quick headache relief.

I usually work first on relaxation to get client comfortable and their muscles relaxed. This includes heat such as hot stones and steamed towels.

I also thoroughly work through the rotator cuff muscles, the erectors (the postural muscles on either side of the spine), rhomboids, serratus anterior and etc with compression, heat, soothing Swedish and sometimes stretches.

After this, I turn the client side lying and begin my slow targeting of the levator scapulae. This involves cupping of the upper shoulder and pinning the muscle and involving a stretch and having the client activate the muscle by shrugging and tilting their heads. Lastly, I end with orthopedic neck work with the person lying on their back , where I can address the origin in the top of the neck and create space in this area where muscles really jumble up. Over the past few weeks I’ve really been developing my technique of this targeting of this specific muscle and have seen amazing results. Not just in session, but also reports of better quality of life between sessions.

I won’t say it’s the case for every client, but I will say, this muscle is very OFTEN a source of pain that people will identify as the beginning source of pain of their headaches and tension.

If this sounds like you, I’d love to work with you and see if we can work towards better quality of your life together.

My books are open Monday-Thursday 9-2 at Relax Lab in Tyler TX and I have ability to arrange mobile appointments on Fridays and Saturdays when they are scheduled further out.

I will be adding 2 extra days a week to my schedule starting next week. Until further notice I will be working Monday-Thursdays and my books will be open to book with me from 9-2.

Relax Lab has amazing different appointment types they offer! The My Recovery is possibly the favorite because the freedom it gives each therapist in how to approach their clients! I was asked to write about how I personally approach My Recovery sessions and this is what I came up with. I absolutely love serving people through massage and have personally seen life changing results from people with chronic pain and constant discomfort.

I’d love to help support your quality of life. Come visit me at Relax Lab and we will start a catered-to-you treatment plan together in your first session with goals and intentions to work towards.

I’d love to see you there. ❤️🫶
