Did you know that doing everything “right” (the supplements, the workouts, the meal plans, the prayer and scripture) can still leave you stuck, and that the checklist itself might be the reason why?

In this episode of Sparking Wholeness, I unpack why so many high-achieving, well-informed women hit a wall in their healing journey even when they’re doing all the “correct” things.

I walk through three mindset roadblocks keeping people in survival mode: the checklist trap, misunderstanding what survival mode actually looks like, and the deeper question underneath it all, “am I broken?”

You’ll also learn why the nervous system has to feel safe before the body can use any of the good things you’re giving it, the two different settings of survival mode (fight-or-flight versus shutdown/freeze), and how Elijah’s collapse in 1 Kings 19 shows that God’s response to burnout has always been physical care first, not more spiritual effort.

Whether you’re exhausted no matter how much sleep you get, feel flat and unmotivated instead of anxious, or you’ve been asking “why isn’t any of this working,” this episode offers a different way to understand what your body has actually been trying to tell you.

Nobody told me this part, and I worked in education for over ten years!

We talk so much about kids’ focus, behavior, and attention. But rarely about what’s actually fueling their brain when they walk into that classroom.

Research followed primary school kids and found a direct link between breakfast, blood glucose stability, and short-term memory. Kids with steadier blood sugar simply remembered more of what they’d just learned.

That afternoon meltdown. The “I don’t know” when you ask about their day. The forgotten instructions. Sometimes it’s not attitude. It’s fuel.

This goes for teens too, by the way. So many teens I talk to are skipping breakfast and wondering why their anxiety continues to spike. This is a major puzzle piece!

The fix isn’t complicated. It’s protein at breakfast, consistently, over the cereal-only mornings. Small shift, real difference.

Share with a parent who needs this before the bell rings again.

And stay tuned for a month of support tools from me, coming in August!

They didn’t need another diagnosis. They needed someone to ask a different question and look at the big picture.

We started with their gut. It took time. It took dedication. But they’re more mentally clear, less foggy, less anxious than they’ve ever been.

I wish more people knew this before they gave up.

So many of my clients come to me exhausted. Not from the mood symptoms themselves, but from being handed diagnosis after diagnosis with no real relief in between.

Here’s what I’ve learned after years of doing this work: a label can describe what you’re experiencing. It can’t always explain why.

The gut is one of the most overlooked pieces of that “why.” It’s constantly talking to your brain through your nervous system, your immune system, your microbiome. When that conversation is disrupted, your mood reflects it, regardless of what’s written on your chart.

Healing isn’t usually instant. It takes time. It takes real dedication. But it’s possible, even after you’ve tried everything else.

You’re not broken. Sometimes you just need someone willing to ask a different question.

Here’s a reframe my younger self needed: you’re not anxious or depressed because you’re not praying hard enough. Your nervous system is overwhelmed, and your body is getting your attention.

Some of us were taught anxiety or depression are spiritual problems. But most of the time, they’re physiological alerts.

I’m Erin, Christian functional medicine practitioner and survivor of PTSD, depression, and bipolar disorder. Symptom-free for over a decade, thanks to a root-cause, integrative approach to supporting my mind, body, and spirit.

I think about this passage more than almost any other in Scripture, especially these days in my work as a functional medicine practitioner who is also a survivor of mental illness and trauma.

We tend to think healing starts with insight.

Figure out what’s wrong, understand it, then feel better.

But God’s own response to Elijah’s collapse says otherwise. Nourishment and rest came first. The processing came later.

If your body has been bracing for a while, maybe it doesn’t need another answer yet. Maybe it just needs to be fed and rested first.

Restoration comes in many forms. Sometimes the seemingly simplest steps are the exact ones you need to bring the safety signals back.

I write about this in my book: the brain doesn’t file traumatic memories the way it files everything else.

The inner critic (inner bully) you’ve battled since childhood? It’s not a character flaw. It’s not you being “too sensitive” or “too much.” That’s your posterior cingulate cortex, the same part of your brain that helps write your sense of self, trying to make sense of something it was never designed to file neatly.

Your trauma isn’t just a memory. For a while, it may have become part of how you saw yourself. That’s protective. And that can change.

I know it’s difficult to untangle who you are from what happened to you, whether it’s Big T trauma, little t, complex trauma created by chronic stress, or even chronic nervous system unrest from your body trying to adapt. I’ve walked through this myself. And I’m still living this journey real time!

There is purpose in the symptoms. It’s part of your God-given design, and it’s not just a modern phenomenon.

Your labs came back normal.
But your body is exhausted, your sleep is broken, and you don’t feel like yourself anymore.

That’s not in your head. That’s your nervous system sending dashboard alerts.

Trauma and chronic stress don’t just affect your emotions. They change the way your body digests food, regulates blood sugar, stores weight, and makes the neurotransmitters that help you feel calm and focused.

Nutrition for Trauma Healing is a 10-module self-paced course that teaches you how to partner with your body through all of it. No diet plans. No willpower lectures. Just practical, gentle, faith-based tools that help your body feel safe enough to heal.

Through July 31, use code HEALING20 for $20 off. 💫

Learn how to use nutrition for trauma healing, PTSD, and burnout. Discover nervous system supportive foods, simple meal strategies, and practical tools to calm your body and support deeper emotional recovery.

This isn’t meant to scare you. It’s meant to validate something a lot of you already sense but have never had language for.

It may also validate that your labs can be “normal” and your body can still be carrying something real.

I dig into the research and what to actually do with it in my newsletter this week.

You can also find a deeper dive on a functional medicine approach to healing in my redesigned and updated course Nutrition for Trauma Healing. Comment HEAL to check out info!

I almost didn’t post this.

Because somewhere along the way, I decided testimonies were supposed to have a certain arc. Rock bottom, then Jesus, then everything gets better. Mine never fit that mold. My hardest years happened while I was already trying to follow Him, not before.

So I stayed quiet about the “during.” The assaults. The self-harm. The breakdown. The years I sat in church wondering if the comfort everyone sang about was actually available to me, or just to people whose stories were “tidier” than mine.

Here’s what I know now that I didn’t know then: a messy middle isn’t proof you’re doing faith wrong. It’s just proof you’re still in it.

If your story doesn’t have a clean before-and-after either, you’re not disqualified from having something worth sharing. You might just be standing in the middle of it, closer to the other side than you think.

This is a lot of what Live Beyond Your Label is about: the chapters we don’t put on the highlight reel, and what it looks like to keep going anyway.

This is the concept nobody tells you about healing. And it’s the hardest thing I had to learn, that I’m still working through, real time. It’s the most difficult concept to try to help my clients understand.

More isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the checklist itself becomes the thing standing between you and feeling better.

Your body doesn’t need a longer list. It needs to feel safe enough to use the one it already has.

This takes time. It takes self-compassion. It takes slowing down and evaluating what’s draining you, and what’s nourishing you.

These are all starting points in my book, my coaching practice, and you can start evaluating now by commenting ALERT. I’ll send you my personal check-in system that helps me with my overwhelm.
