Today participants returned to Gunston Hall. Katherine enjoyed herself so much the last time, that she joined the group again! The staff were as incredible as last time, and participants had the chance to tour the house, gardens, and do an interactive archaeology activity. The archaeology activity had all the participants buzzing, as they got to try their hand at piecing together broken ceramics. They worked in teams and with the Gunston Hall staff to get everything taped together and good as new! In the gardens, the staff had peanuts for us to harvest, and they sent us home with some so that we can plant or cook them! After the tour, Tom, Katherine, and Kyle joined Nicky and Melody for a picnic where we enjoyed the beautiful fall afternoon. After the picnic, the remaining participants rated the day a 10/10!

Pumpkin season arrived at SPARC ~ Reston today, and it came with a burst of pure excitement. When we laid out the foam pumpkins and decorating kits for our craft, one participant took one look at the design options and declared them "so so so so so cool," her eyes lighting up as she started planning her creation. That energy spread around the table. Because every kit was a little different, each participant got to make their own choices about colors and designs, practicing decision-making and fine motor skills as they painted and customized their pumpkins. The finished pieces were adorable and completely unique, and the pride in the room was easy to see as everyone admired each other's work before taking their pumpkins home. Since they're made of foam, we hope they'll become decorations our participants can bring out every fall for years to come. The Halloween fun kept rolling with a lively round of spooky trivia and a game of blackjack, where participants sharpened their addition skills while trying to beat the dealer, and a trail walk gave everyone a chance to enjoy the leaves beginning to turn.

An important message from one of our parents:

My son Adam, has a t-shirt that reads: “Feel the power of the disability vote”.

The upcoming election is vitally important to the disability community. With the current administration reducing Medicaid benefits, gutting the Department of Education, and potentially terminating programs such as IDEA, it is up to us to reverse this action by electing candidates to the House of Representatives and Senate who will fight what the administration is doing and attempting to do.

I am suggesting that you consider this to be a one issue election.

As parents, our one issue must be our children, and we must vote for those candidates we believe will provide the most benefits and services to and for our children. I am certainly not going to tell you
who to vote for, but I am requesting that you think about this important issue.

Please forward this message to all of your family and friends in Virginia and all across the country.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Michael D. Toobin

Today SPARC~Arlington was shaking things up with fresh dance moves, new stories, and our own take on Yellow Submarine by The Beatles! This National Day of Writing had us imagining whole new worlds and creating a few props for our stories. With a little inspiration from our jeopardy streak we got to writing and making decisions on our own choose your own adventure story. Stay tuned to see where our creative writing takes us next!

Halloween took over SPARC ~ Reston today, and while our mummy wrapping race had everyone howling with laughter (this group never misses a chance to compete), the moment that stole the show came during music bingo. Participants were listening closely, calling out song titles and marking their cards with growing excitement, and before long the whole room was singing and dancing along. When "Ghostbusters" came on, I heard one of our participants singing out loud for the very first time, even adding a few dance moves. I walked over and asked if he liked this song, and he smiled and said yes. We spent the next minute singing and dancing together, and it was a joy to see him share that side of himself with the group. Moments like this are what music bingo is all about: building listening and recall skills, sure, but also creating a space where everyone feels comfortable enough to join in. Between watercolor skeleton trees, a hilarious round of Halloween Would You Rather, and plenty of spooky fun, it was a truly wonderful day.
