When your emotions and perceptions are constantly dismissed, something quietly breaks down.

You stop trusting what you feel. You second-guess what you saw. You doubt what you know.

Betrayals rarely exist without components of emotional manipulation.

This is very disorienting. Over time, it can make you a stranger to yourself.

I frequently hear, “I feel like I am not being a good mom.”

Which leads to the question ”What is a “Good mom”?  

This could be a long discussion.  🤨
But here is a thought … I have observed a common thread of exhaustion in the mom’s that I work with.  And in myself. 

Perhaps you are under-supported and over-extended.

The answer probably isn’t becoming “better” at managing everything. Or berating yourself.

Maybe your nervous system is overloaded from carrying too much for too long.

The mental load.
The constant decision making.
The overstimulation.
The pressure to do it all well.
The demands of modern motherhood.  

Maybe the exhaustion, irritability, brain fog, and overwhelm are not signs that you’re a “bad mom” …

Maybe they are signs that your body is asking for support, rest, space and regulation.

There are many forms of betrayal: emotional, sexual, financial, addictions, hidden lives… but they share a common thread...

There are many forms of betrayal: emotional, sexual, financial, addictions, hidden lives… but they share a common thread:

Deception.  Secrecy in a relationship with a primary attachment figure where your safety mattered. 

Betrayal trauma is profoundly disorienting because it doesn’t just impact your relationship — it impacts your nervous system, your attachment system, family system, and your sense of reality.

It impacts your reality of your past, present and future.  

Your mind may constantly scan for danger.
Your body may feel anxious, exhausted, numb, hypervigilant, disconnected… all at the same time.

You may question: Your intuition, your worth, your memories, your ability to trust yourself again.

And if you’ve felt “crazy” trying to make sense of it all… You’re not crazy.

Your nervous system is responding to a profound emotional injury.

Now that’s it’s May 10th I’m reviewing the month of April 🤪 did that month fly by to anyone else?!

I’m practicing slowing down to consciously notice gains, lessons, feelings, grief, glimmers from the month. I always find myself surprised by how incredibly powerful our minds are - we find what we are looking for.

Here’s to “Maycember” - cheering you on 💛

When an emotion is triggered a physiological response happens in the body.

Chemicals are released into the blood stream, these chemicals flush through the body and can clear in about 90 seconds.

However, what frequently happens is our belief about the story of the feelings or sensations (or our thoughts) can re-activate the emotional response. Our nervous system may perceive the feeling / sensation is a threat. Or we may avoid and resist the emotions, thus not allowing the cycle to complete.

Building our capacity to ride out the emotional wave without getting hooked by the story decreases anxiety, discomfort and in the long run more suffering.
