Last week Pip and I were weeding the front steps where I had accidentally grabbed poison ivy. Ope.

Came inside immediately and washed my hand in cold water and slathered it with jewelweed juices. I still got poison ivy. No big deal.

But to my body it was a big deal. And so, I’m immune system went into overdrive leaving me with painfully inflamed blisters down my inner legs, behind my knees, my elbow, and across my stomach.

I’m, like, not having a good time right now. True story.

But I’m not without herbal allies to help me through. Does it take away my poison ivy or my horrid rash? No, but they can soothe my skin and feed my immune system while I wait to see a doctor about the underlying cause of such a violent immune response to grabbing one plant one time.

Here are a few products keeping me from cutting my legs off Civil War hospital style:

Happy Lughnasadh, friends!

My grandmother's soda bread pan is scorched black on the bottom and has one bent handle from a drop nobody remembers. I only pull it out once a year.

Today's the day. Doing something a bit new here... Field Note Fridays!

Writing is a huge part of my herbal practice. To me you cannot separate the lore from the actual plant medicine. They are one and the same. I love weaving plant lore into my essays and creative writings. Currently, I'm writing the first novel in the Shadowroot Trilogy where our protagonist, Nettie, must navigate generational trauma, neurodivergence, and a curse only she has the power to break... if she wants to.

This is an excerpt from the worldbuilding I do every Friday.

“A frightened mind wants a room, not a reason.”

Folded small inside the spine of a family Bible, an undated mid-19th-century leaf of paper records a father’s quiet defense against something watching from the autumn treeline. He never names the creature, and he never names the plant—only its square stem, wrinkled leaf, and the peace it brought to a troubled house.

“I could not tell my children what stood at the treeline and I still cannot tell you. But I could build four walls and hang the old plant over the door, and there is not a soul in this house that has been taken by what watches us…”

Hey, guys. Can I talk to you about one of my main baddies, Ouch Goop?

This was my very first formulation in the Apothecary and a daily user for Jake and I.

It’s packed with native medicinals grown locally for the whole purpose of soothing a variety of skin woes… like busting the window out your car and then getting glass embedded in your foot. Ouch Goop is my go to for all the happy little accidents I find myself in on the farm.

Jake uses Ouch Goop routinely on his hand for work related cuts and scrapes and has found much relief. It’s kinda amazing how good this goop is.
