Most kids will never appreciate the sacrifices that went into creating better for them. Not from their parents, and not from me. They'll never truly know what was given up to create moments like this.

And that's okay.

Because moments like this make it worth it.

Rehearsal vs Adaptation

The first drill looked like volleyball because it was. We were rehearsing a volleyball position and teaching her to receive force in an athletic stance.

The second drill looked nothing like volleyball. It was building elasticity, stiffness, coordination, and reactive strength.

My training draws from powerlifting, strongman, basketball, wrestling, boxing, running, volleyball, football, baseball, softball, and swimming so there will be times it looks nothing like "your sport" but that's why we seek to do both rehearse specific and create overall adaptation.

Football

I've watched teams with every advantage fall short, and teams with no business succeeding exceed every expectation.

The difference is almost never talent.

It's work.

One thing most athletes and coaches skip is proper technique. Kids get too far being allowed to do their own thing when there is a better or right way to do it and they simply were never made to fix it.

I have an athlete on a nationally ranked team whose coach requires every attempt to be recorded and reviewed. They aren't just letting athletes do things however they want. They're constantly cleaning up mechanics because better mechanics create better results.

Record your shots, swings, throws, drills, or whatever skill you're working on. Watch it back and make corrections.

Lifting has been doing this for years. More sports should, too.

We are creating moments these kids may never fully appreciate.

They likely won't remember every workout or tie their success back to them, but greatness is being built nonetheless.

Not all athletes appreciate the edge they are being given, but then again, not all athletes are meant to be great either.
