Flow is offering a Life Soak workshop to give people the space to explore their experiences of living and dying. We cannot extricate life and death from each other, no matter how hard we may try. So, let’s dive in, heart first, into the exploration—together. Take stock of your life, soak into your beautiful existence, not by shutting the fact of death away, but by embracing it with a full heart.
I hope you will consider joining us. Our time together will include a mix of personal reflection, small and large group dialogue, the creation of your very own “life book”, gentle movement, and an opportunity to be in community as you navigate the vast emotions and experiences of living and dying.

come. tell a loved one.
let’s soak
in our lives
together.

when we create the image of a villain/ evil person/ devil somewhere out there,

it makes it possible for us to avoid, suppress and deny the villain alive within.

and when enough of us do this, we create the exact circumstances that allow insidious terror to flourish.

to imagine a devil—one worthy of judgment and hate—allows us to always look to another point in the distance—to an irredeemable culprit who is farrr from me.
(because, of course i am worthy of redemption! i didn’t mean it! i am trying! i am good!)

we weaponize our capacity for compassion by mistaking it with avoidance.

but true compassion is not built of excuses. it is built with alive-ness, in the belly of responsibility and accountability to ALL of our humanity. our rage can be kept tender, as nayyirah waheed’s poem reminds, if only we practice.

here and now and within
are really the places where
assault, control and domination live

can i see and sit with the parts of me and the parts of my loved ones that have behaved toxically, inexcusably?

can i be uncomfortable with this mirror, and yet remain accountable? can i sit with the conflict within me with love so that i can build a culture of redemption within and around myself?

can i be with the darkest parts of me and our culture and bring presence, love, compassion and “godliness” to the hells we live within?

where, more than here? when, more than now is the cultivation of love, responsibility and accountability more essential?

hellscapes need us to be alive within them. to be alive to the beauty and terror we are capable of.

and when we see ourselves engaging in terror (or those in our networks, families, communities), to have the practice to witness it, name it, stop it, repent for it, and ask for community support as we engage in new ways of being.

the search for the devils/criminals and the search for the gods/heroes outside of us is what keeps us repeating cycles of violence. let the circle ⭕️ draw closer and closer, nearer and nearer—until we see all of us as capable of horror and therefore capable of glory.

may we be powerful enough to be accountable to the whole world -
around and within us.

what i would go back and tell younger me
or, perhaps:
what i am telling the younger me that’s alive in me now
or, perhaps simply what feels true today:

you are not alone in your thinking, henaz.
and while you may be a unique human being (as we all are),
your thoughts are not unique,
because no thoughts truly are.

don’t make an island of yourself in this world as a form of protection for too long.

let the ideas you have out. don’t shut them inside yourself and then bubble up with an old frustration you didn’t trust anyone to carry when it was new. be open and free with your heart-contents.

protection is a fallacy—
you already know this in your bones.

your desire to protect is well intended, but any action birthed in fear is shortsighted.
you can’t protect ancestral wisdom via gatekeeping and call it justice.

justice is not linear.
and all Truth already circulates in the fibers of all beings.

try to relinquish your idea of perfectionism as quickly as you can—and remember that striving for perfection is birthed by shame.

you are enough.
you are just right.
you could never be too much.
or too little.
you fit in you and in this world.

share your weaving thoughts out loud and often. there are those who want to hear you, as you are. trust that.

nothing you say is yours.
do not get tempted to colonize thought just because they taught you to.
remember: all Truth and Wisdom are channeled.

get to know your gut—especially
when it constricts and when it expands. this is the most important relationship. make an oath to build it.
listen to what it says
(this is how you know)
and then follow that path.

would love to hear if any of these resonate for you, too 🙏🏽✨🩵

Image ID: the words above are written against the backdrop of a night sky. two bright planets shine close to one another in a clearing of trees—jupiter and venus, the planets of abundance and beauty, wisdom and love.

went to Chani (like Annie or (c)Hani) workshop for activists this week, so the power of these planets to help us gather with deeper intimacy, vulnerability, trust and shared values has been on my mind.

“since this injury, i haven’t been able to climb like i used to”
“after having a baby, my body doesn’t feel like mine anymore”
“my health anxiety only started after my father passed away unexpectedly”
”i just want to go back to how i used to be…”

how often do we frame our relationships to our bodies and minds this way: nostalgic about what used to be and how to get back there?

so i just want to say, loudly,
for all of us in the back
(and the front and sides, too)
WE CAN NEVER GO BACK
what was, is simply no longer.
even if you regain joint mobility post-surgery, even if your anxiety decreases, your insomnia improves, your body structure and relationship feels more familiar,
IT IS NOT WHAT IT WAS.
it is, well, what it IS.

because our society is
obsessed with linear time and youth and nostalgia,
it is so easy to think what was was right, beautiful, better.
but it was simply a part of the path to us becoming and being who we are—a stop on the journey.

but here’s the thing, we can reclaim and re-center parts of ourselves that we have hidden or denied as adaptation and protection. we can go back to ourselves and call forth the parts of us that we want to set free to remember our wholeness.

because our intrinsic worth has and always will be there. it’s never up for debate.

setting ourselves more and more free is part of the journey. but freedom doesn’t come from a place of nostalgic reflections or future dreams.

freedom comes from being with who we are in this present moment, as we are.
be you. be true. be now.

life soak: a workshop where we deep dive into our living and dying

our deaths are a companion to our lives.

we only know one because we know the other.

and, yet, we don’t often talk openly about this partnership.

but, what if we did?

how might contemplating our dying change how we practice our lives?

what would it free in us?

join us for a two-part virtual workshop - a chance to explore your dying so you can fully *soak* into your living.

this series will give participants the opportunity to contemplate their life and its finite-ness; confront their fears, worries, curiosities about death; and begin creating a “life book” - a personal memoir of sorts.

let’s soak
in our lives
together.

nourish the gut, the earth in you. it is our center. what nourishes, metabolizes and ripens things within us. top three things i always recommend:
1) warm water to start the day. before even brushing your teeth. 8-16 oz and warmer than room temp if you can manage. water is what we’re made of. so drinking warm water is like coming home to yourself
2) warm, soupy, made-with-water foods, in the morning especially. don’t start your day with something cold like cereal or yogurt. this will help stoke digestive fire and support healthy metabolism.
3) chew your food. we have up to 32 teeth, so they say 32 bites for each morsel of food is the way. the stomach wasn’t meant to break down chunks of food. the teeth were. use them!

beyond the realm of the mind, before the realm of language and perception,

there is a realm of being. of presence. of listening for the response of the body to the stimuli around us.

in a world that profits from our confusion, fear and disembodiment, can we trust in our body-breath-spirit?

if you close your eyes, and repeat the following sentences to yourself, what do you feel in your body?

“i am deeply connected to the world and everything that exists,” or “the earth below me holds me up, the water flows from rivers to my cells, the sky around me feeds me breath.”

notice your breath, chest, belly, face, shoulders, arms and legs.

when the fascia of the body, the breadth of the breath, and the tenor of the spirit relax upon hearing a thought,
it is an indication that the thought is true.

may we come home to the breath in us

may we find freedom in the fascia of our bodies

may we resonate with the energy of the spirit that moves around and within us

may we be the medicine we need in this disembodied time by letting our body be the extraordinary vessel it is

if this kind of embodied healing work calls you, join us for one (or all) of our many offerings:

yoga, qigong, reiki, acupuncture and classical chinese medicine to remind us of the medicine we are.

feeling all the layers of things these days.
perhaps you are, too. the grief and the openings. the beauty and the atrocity. the mundane and the monumental. i’m struggling with the balance of it all—and what words to say to navigate it. if you’re feeling it, too, just know i’m with you.
