This was too good not to do an old fashioned repost! Thanks for sharing these wise words 🙌
"Coaches, I got some good news and bad news:
The good news first: you are not responsible for your clients’ results. Your job as a coach is to help them to better understand the world they inhabit, how they can best begin to approach that world in a manner that they can best navigate, and to set achievable yet challenging goals that make sense.
But human nature and behavioral psychology dictate that the vast majority of people will not just do a 180 because they hired a coach. Most of you will struggle to see the outcome that people claim they want. This is usually due to unrealistic expectations and a natural ambivalence that comes with behavior change.
So stop feeling like a failure every time a client doesn’t end up on the cover of a fitness magazine 12 weeks after they started working with you. Those ppl are outliers, not the norm. And there are only a handful of them that have maintained those incredible transformations.
Now for the bad news: you are not responsible for your clients’ results. So while the marketing gurus will tell you to share your results… be careful. It might get to your head. You might start to think you’ve got the secret sauce because of a few incredible changes or some six pack ab shot after teaching someone about calories or macros.
Well, you’re probably not special. I’ve seen hundreds of coaches come and go who had great results with a few clients. Hell, I have an entire roster of clients who came to me after working with a lot of these coaches (and the ones who’ve come from coaches w/100s of thousands of IG followers are often the ones with the most disordered eating patterns, thanks fitfluencers). It’s not out of malice, social networks and survivorship bias are a hell of a drug.
Remove the self applied pressure. But also drop the ego. You, as a coach, are not special. But you can help your clients to see what is special about them and that can help them to see success. Even if success isn’t what IG would have you believe."
