Three twelves is only three days. It never felt like three.

The day before counts. So does the morning after. Run three nights together and there's no time in between to catch up on sleep.

What worked better for me: one night, a night off, two nights, a night off. Fewer days off in a row, but enough room to breathe, and I showed up able to work well.

In my first year, I didn't realize I had other options. We have more say in our schedule than it can seem, even if it means going one step further and trading shifts with a coworker or giving shifts away when that's possible. It may be worth trying at your next request window.

How do you like to stack your nights?

For a long time I assumed the nurse who walked in looking rested was doing something I wasn't.

Self-judgement is brutal. And it's usually working with half the information.

You never know someone's life dynamics. Their support system. What they're using to cope. What shows on the outside is often very different from what's happening on the inside.

If you've been measuring yourself against the nurse who looks like she has it all figured out, you may be comparing your inside to her outside.

Have you ever been the nurse who looked rested and wasn't?

I stopped lying in a dark, quiet room trying to fall asleep.

I know what the sleep-hygiene lists say. For a long time I tried to follow them exactly.

What changed wasn't a better routine. It was letting go of an expectation that didn't fit my life. Once I stopped fighting for sleep, I noticed it came more easily. There was less to fight.

What that looked like for me:
• A few minutes with my family before going down
• Food prep before nap time, so I could sleep a little longer
• A favorite show on, falling asleep next to my kid at nap time

I loved nap time with my kids.

Letting go of the day is hard for most nurses, nights or not. If you're committed to nights, look for ways to embrace it rather than fight it.

Every sleep-schedule article assumes your week looks the same as last week.

Twelve-hour shifts sound consistent. Same start, same end. Everything around them isn't. Which three nights. Whether they run together. Whose turn it is for the weekend. The holiday. Then family, friends, and actually being part of your own life.

I worked nights for eight years. For the first year, I chased consistency. It took until I was six months pregnant with my fourth child to accept that the expectation wasn't realistic.

It was like having your first baby and believing everything would go by the book. By the fourth, I was at ease letting go and moving with what felt right.

That first year cost me. I lost connection with friends and family because I was too tired to show up. Very few boundaries. Almost no room for my own needs. Not my wants. My needs.

Life on nights is not a daily repeatable journey. Next: what replaced the chase.

If you work nights, what part of your week never repeats?

This was a big week: a conference, a baby shower, two very different rooms to walk into.

Both reminded me of the same thing: no matter how experienced you are, there's always a next version of "new." New role. New team. New family member. New season of life.

What's one "novice moment" you've had recently, something that made you feel like you were starting over, even though you've done plenty before?

Comment below! We'd love to hear where you are in your own transition.

This weekend was also highlighted by helpiing with a baby shower... welcoming a new grandchild into our family.

Somewhere between the decorating and watching my daughter-in-law get ready for this next chapter, it hit me: becoming a grandparent is its own transition. New role, new rhythms, a new way of showing up for family.

A new department, a new role, a new chapter at home. They all ask the same thing of us: let yourself be a beginner again, even after years of doing this.

Tag someone who's navigating a big transition right now.

This weekend I traded the unit for a conference room in San Francisco, a reminder that growth doesn't only happen at the bedside.

Stepping away to learn alongside other nurses, ask questions out loud, and sit in sessions where I didn't already know the answer... it's a good kind of uncomfortable. Networking and continuing education aren't extras on top of clinical skill. They're part of it.

You don't need a big conference to do this. A webinar, a professional group chat, a conversation with someone outside your usual unit. It all counts as investing in your own growth.

Save this as a nudge to invest in your own development this month.

Real talk: what's one small thing, not a strategy, not a hack, just a real moment, that helped you feel like yourself again after a rough shift?

Could be sitting in your car for two extra minutes. Could be texting the one coworker who gets it. Could be nothing profound at all.

We're collecting the real, unpolished versions, not the Pinterest ones.
