June is National Safety Month, making it the perfect time to talk about one of the greatest risks facing older adults: falls.
Recently, we worked with a client who experienced three falls within six months.
The first fall resulted in emergency responders being called to assist him from the floor. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
The second fall resulted in a broken shoulder and a rehabilitation stay.
The third fall caused a fractured hip requiring surgery and another round of rehabilitation.
While each incident was different, the pattern was clear.
The risk was increasing, and it was time to explore solutions that would support both safety and quality of life.
After discussing options with him and his family, we explored both home care and senior living communities.
One assisted living community stood out because of its welcoming environment, attentive staff, and supportive approach.
Today, he enjoys a structured routine with assistance for medication management, regular showers, housekeeping, and laundry services.
More importantly, he has gained something many older adults are missing: connection.
He has made new friends, participates in community activities, and has the peace of mind that someone is checking on him every day.
His family also feels reassured knowing support is available whenever he needs it.
Falls can happen in an instant, but the impact can change the course of someone’s life.
Sometimes the conversation is not about giving up independence. It is about creating the right environment to preserve it.
This National Safety Month, take a moment to consider the fall risks facing the older adults in your life.
One proactive conversation today may prevent a life-changing injury tomorrow.
