To be fair, getting into the whole discourse of tongue ties was most definitely outside of the scope of that course. I feel that there should have been some discussion around possible problems a tongue tie could cause.

PS this is not only a problem with breastfed babies. In fact this little guy had problems when directly nursing and when bottle feeding.

Self Talk is one of my favorite strategies to support language development!

It’s so easy to implement and incorporate into daily routines, use it during play time, bath time, or while preparing food!

It can be helpful to use simplified language (although you don’t always have to) and to implement parentese (that’s the sing song voice that grabs kids attention.

The stop sounds in s blends often sound voiced! What does it sound like when you say these words?

PS, some kids will pick up on this when learning to read & write, I love to see that they can hear those differences!

Speech therapists work on more than just speech sounds (although I do love working on articulation)!

How I teach kids to say the R sound!

Keep them those core elements in mind (lateral borders braced high in the back of the mouth, midline of tongue slightly lowered, and lips slightly rounded) to give additional tweaks as needed.

An example of using cognitive reframing when working on the R sound (yes you can target retroflex R this same way).

I like using the nonsense sounds as a palate cleanser, it makes them more open to using their articulators in a new way!

Giving it a new name is a game changer, because we really truly are working on a new sound!

Working on lateral /s/? Having trouble getting it even with the stretchy T? Here are a few more things to try and think about!

When treating lateralized sounds, cognitive reframing is one of the most powerful tools we have in our toolbox! ! hope this makes sense (I was out of breath trying to get my thoughts out, super pregnant over here
1)!

Also had a few commenters saving it was a disservice not to correct kids when saying sounds incorrectly, and as an SLP my professional stand is that there is a time and place to correct these errors, but it is totally okay to find enjoyment in them when kids are young 😉
