Telescopes are another type of optical device that can be helpful for those with low vision. Telescopes are typically used while stationary for spotting or scanning things at a distance. These devices can be handheld or clip on to a pair of eyeglasses, much different than the telescopes you may be familiar with for star gazing. Finding street signs and identifying aisles in the grocery store are just a few things that telescopes may be useful for.

When you hear the word microscope, you probably automatically think about your high school science classes. But in the low vision rehabilitation world, a microscope refers to a lens that is mounted in eyeglasses. A microscope is a stronger power than your typical add for reading. The main advantage of a microscope for those with low vision is that it is completely hands free. However, the reading material must be held up very close to the face in order to achieve the proper focal distance. A microscope is prescribed by the optometrist and generally for the "better" eye. The low vision occupational therapist can assist with training on the use of the microscope, including the proper distance to hold reading material and adding the necessary lighting to the environment for optimal viewing.

When you are on the go and need to use magnification outside of the home, portable electronic magnifiers can be very useful. These magnifiers are small, compact and will fit in your purse or pocket. Just like the larger CCTV, the portable electronic magnifiers use a camera to project a magnified image on the screen.
Your low vision occupational therapist can recommend a portable magnifier that is right for you and your reading needs.

Electronic magnification comes in a variety of sizes and styles. This type of magnifier uses a camera to display a magnified image on a screen. Let's talk about desktop options. Desktop electronic magnifiers, like a CCTV, are great for use in the home. Reading the newspaper, a cookbook, bills or a prescription bottle can be made easier with this type of magnifier. This is also a good choice for doing handiwork or writing, as there is room underneath the camera, as you can see the gentleman who is filling in a check.
Learning to use this type of magnification takes some time. However, the uses for activities in the home are countless.

One of the most basic ways to improve independence for those with low vision is through the use of magnifying devices. A stand magnifier rests on the reading surface and the user glides the magnifier along the line of text. There are a few benefits to this type of magnifier. One, the user will not fatigue from holding it up. Two, there is no struggle to try and hold the magnifier steady.
A low vision occupational therapist can work in conjunction with the optometrist to find the perfect magnification. Training to use the magnifier can be completed with a variety of reading materials.

Here is a great analogy that I came across last year during Occupational Therapy month and wanted to share. I think it is said so well and really gets to the heart of what OT can do in a way that is totally understandable.

I often get asked “What is occupational therapy?”
Many times a patient will say, “But I’m retired, I don’t have an occupation anymore.”
Occupation is used to mean anything that occupies your day, or in another way anything you need or want to do each day to live your life.
If you were sick, injured, suddenly lost part of your vision, what things would be important to YOU to still accomplish daily? An occupational therapist will help you figure out how to continue doing those things!

Occupational therapists (OT) help people live life to the fullest! The focus of occupational therapy is to ensure you can participate in the things you need and want to do as safely and as independently as possible! Your OT may provide training on a variety of devices or equipment to help you accomplish a task. Or your OT might help brainstorm a new or different way to complete a task if illness or impairment prevents you from doing it in your usual manner. Occupational therapists can also evaluate your environment and provide recommendations to modify your home or other spaces to work better for you! The evaluation and treatment plan is a collaborative process focusing on YOUR goals and needs. Low vision occupational therapy focuses on accomplishing these things despite a change in your vision.

Hi! I’m Amber, owner of Tidewater Vision OT. I have been a treating occupational therapist since 2013. My experience includes working with older adults in a variety of settings; acute care, skilled nursing facilities and home healthcare. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin. After learning more about occupational therapy and having a desire to pursue a “helping” career, I enrolled at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA where I received my Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy. While in graduate school I developed an interest in low vision, focusing my thesis project on this area of practice. I have taken a variety of continuing education courses focused on occupational therapy interventions for low vision clients over the years. Currently, I am pursuing a Certificate of Low Vision Rehabilitation from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the only comprehensive low vision rehabilitation certificate for occupational therapists in the United States.

I decided to launch Tidewater Vision Occupational Therapy in 2020 due to a need in the community for focused vision therapy for older adults. My hope is to provide vision therapy services that will allow clients to improve independence, increase safety and maintain their quality of life despite changes in their vision.

I live in Norfolk, VA with my husband and our two youngest girls. My step daughter currently attends school in Wisconsin and is pursuing a career in OT, too! I look forward to serving the low vision community in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
