It was a long road but so worth it to have the privilege to provide world class Orthopedic care back home. I graduated top of my class from Waimea High School on Kauai. Completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering at UH Manoa where I met my wife, a Lahainaluna alumna. Spent another 4 years getting my MD from John A Burns School of Medicine at UH. I matched into a highly competitive Orthopedic Surgery program at UCSF one of the top programs in the nation. Subsequently went on to spend another additional year in fellowship at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute refining my techniques in adult Hip and Knee Arthroplasty. I am Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and am a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. Happy to be on Maui providing care for our community. 🤙

It was an honor to be a part of the Faculty teaching at the Depuy Advanced Anterior Hip Course in Long Beach, CA the other week. When I first decided to start practicing on Maui, I was worried my career acheivements might be limited. Being selected to teach amongst my peers on the mainland is a major milestone and a testament to what our operative teams here on Maui have achieved. Dr. Thielen is the only surgeon on Maui performing minimally invasive anterior total hip arthroplasty at Aloha Surgery Center.
The anterior approach utilizes an anatomical inter muscular plane between the Sartorius and Tensor muscles. There is no cutting of muscle or tendon which results in a quicker recovery. The anterior approach also creates a more stable hip postoperative than other approaches allowing our patients to get back to surfing, yoga, and any of their activities without restrictions.
The implant shown has pores in the metal that the bone grows into for the long term stability. The bearing surface is ceramic against highly wear resistant plastic.

Dr. Thielen graduated with a civil engineering degree, but decided to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery because of his time volunteering at Shriners Hospital on Oahu. At Shiners, he fell in love with the idea of getting to improve the quality of life for individuals.

Dr. Thielen is the first surgeon on Maui to perform and offer a direct anterior approach hip replacement. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial one. It involves making a 4–5 inch incision in front of the hip, rather than the side or back, which allows the surgeon to avoid muscles and tendons without cutting them. This technique can result in less pain, a quicker recovery, and more normal function after surgery. Currently he is the only private practice surgeon on Maui to offer this approach.

At Maui Orthopedic Institute, Dr. Thielen gets to know his patients as individuals allows him to tailor a care plan that more closely meets their needs. Whenever possible, he recommends starting off with the least invasive treatments. He cares for patients of all ages and provides fracture and orthopedic care for shoulders, hips, knees, hands, elbow, and foot.
Every Wednesday Dr. Thielen runs two operating rooms at the Aloha Surgery Center with a specialized total joints team.
