Your body isn't broken. It's been protecting you. đź’™

If you've ever frozen when you wanted to speak up, snapped when you didn't mean to, or felt your heart racing for reasons you couldn't explain — that's your nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do.

Trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, and fawn) are automatic. They happen without your permission, and they can linger long after the moment has passed.

The good news? There are simple, science-backed grounding techniques that can help you feel safe again.
→ The 5-4-3-2-1 method
→ Box breathing
→ Cold water or ice to interrupt panic
→ Saying out loud: "I am safe right now."

We wrote a full guide to help you understand what's happening in your body — and what you can do about it. 💛

Support doesn’t look the same for everyone, and it shouldn’t. 💯

At Pacific Mind Health, care is built around you, not a checklist. We listen closely to your story, your lifestyle, what has worked, what hasn’t, and how you are feeling right now.

Quality mental health support starts with understanding the full picture, not just a single symptom or moment in time. If you’re looking for a little extra support this summer, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

ADHD does not look the same from person to person đź’™

Two people can both have an ADHD diagnosis and still experience very different symptoms, strengths, and challenges. Many of the things associated with ADHD, like distraction, restlessness, or forgetfulness, are also experiences most people have at times.

The difference is how often they happen, how intense they feel, and how much they impact daily life. For people with ADHD, these experiences can feel harder to manage and more disruptive to routines and focus.
That is why understanding the full picture matters. Not just the diagnosis, but the individual behind it.

This past weekend, Pacific Mind Health was honored to attend the 2026 Military Veteran Entertainment Awards on Saturday, May 23. 🇺🇸

This inspiring event celebrates Active Duty Military members and Veterans pursuing careers in media, entertainment, and the arts, creating opportunities, connection, recognition, and purpose beyond military service.

We are especially proud that Dr. Joshua Flatow and Pacific Mind Health served as a major sponsor of the event, continuing our commitment to supporting Veterans both during and after service.

From meaningful conversations to incredible stories of resilience and creativity, the evening was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, healing, and support.

“You served us. Now let us serve you.” 💙

Thank you to everyone who made this event so impactful, including veterans, active duty service members, organizers, advocates, and community partners.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, members of our team are sharing practical tools that can support emotional wellness in everyday life. đź’™

This tip comes from Pacific Mind Health office manager Nella Zegarra, who often shares the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique with patients experiencing anxiety or panic.

The exercise helps redirect focus to the present moment through the five senses:

đź‘€ 5 things you can see
âś‹ 4 things you can feel
đź‘‚ 3 things you can hear
🌿 2 things you can smell
🍵 1 thing you can taste

Simple grounding exercises like this can be helpful during overwhelming or stressful moments.

Thank you to Nella for contributing to our Mental Health Awareness Month series.

Politics are no longer just headlines — they’re showing up in people’s nervous systems, relationships, sleep, and everyday mental health.

We’re proud to see our own Veronica Calkins, LCSW featured in a recent article from POLITICO discussing the growing impact of political anxiety and how therapists are helping people cope in healthier, more sustainable ways.

As Veronica highlights, emotional overwhelm and chronic stress tied to the political climate are becoming increasingly common — and support, boundaries, community, and nervous system regulation matter more than ever.
