Around 1 in 9 women are affected by this condition. But much of the time it goes misdiagnosed.
June is Lipedema Awareness Month, and we're here to shed some light on the matter.
- Lipedema is a disorder of fatty tissue that affects an estimated 1 in 9 women.
- It causes a disproportionate buildup of fat in the legs (and sometimes the arms).
- It often starts at puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
- Most women who have lipedema have been told for years that it's a weight problem or it's just how their legs are.
- If you're experiencing any of the symptoms below, that's likely not the case, and it's time to schedule an appointment with a specialist.
A few signs most people miss:
- Legs that feel heavier and more painful than they "should"
- Fat that stops abruptly at the ankles, with normal-looking feet
- Easy bruising on the thighs or calves
- A family history of similar leg shape
- Symptoms that started or worsened during a hormonal shift (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
