Wheelchair tennis takes center court at the 2026 US Open.

From September 8–12, 2026, the 2026 US Open Wheelchair Championships will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Championships bring 48 of the world’s top wheelchair tennis athletes to New York across the men’s, women’s, and quad divisions, while 16 players will compete in the junior wheelchair divisions.

Wheelchair tennis is one of the most highly professionalized adapted sports in the world. It is an elite sport where athletes compete for Grand Slam titles through powerful shot-making, tactical precision, speed, and exceptional wheelchair skills.

Every last Sunday of the month, we highlight a topic as part of our Q&A of the Month. This month's question is:

What are the essential and marginal functions of a job?

Answer: Under Title I of the ADA, essential functions are core parts of a job that every person in that role must be able to do, regardless of their disability. A reasonable accommodation may be needed for an employee to perform the function, but employers are generally not required to eliminate or reassign an essential function as an accommodation. However, employers can be required to eliminate or reassign non-essential marginal functions as an accommodation, when reasonable. The employer can also swap marginal functions amongst employees as a form of reasonable accommodation if an employee with a disability is able to perform some marginal functions but not others.

August is back-to-school season and also Don’t Be a Bully Month. It’s an opportunity to learn about the harmful effects of bullying and educate communities, schools, students, and families about strategies to promote safe and supportive environments for students.

In 2021–2022, according to data published by the National Center for Education Statistics - NCES, about 1 in 5 students ages 12–18 reported being bullied at school. Among students who were bullied, 22% reported that the bullying happened online or by text. Students also reported that bullying was related to various personal characteristics, including their appearance and disability.

Our Center has curated a list of resources to help you learn about bullying and its impact on students’ well-being. The resources include information about the definition of bullying, what constitutes bullying, and strategies and resources for parents, educators, schools, families, and students to prevent and address bullying, particularly bullying affecting students with disabilities.

It’s back-to-school season! Our Center has curated a list of disability resources to help teachers, parents, and students prepare for a successful back-to-school season. The resources include strategies and guides for families of children with disabilities, information on adaptive tools and assistive technologies that can support students with disabilities in learning, and a list of local centers for parent information and resources to help parents participate effectively in their children’s education and development.

We also added a resource from the ADA National Network, “ADA Mini-Unit for High School Educators: Rights, Responsibilities, and the Reasons They Matter.” This collection of resources provides educators with tools to teach youth the basics of the ADA.

We want to share information about Netflix making more than 70 Kids & Family shows and movies more accessible through American Sign Language (ASL) overlays.

Netflix has partnered with SignUp Captions (SignUp Media), an online provider of sign language interpretation for movies and TV series, to create American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations for more than 200 hours of Kids & Family titles on Netflix.

SignUp Media works through a Google Chrome browser extension, so it is currently available only when watching Netflix in Chrome.

Here's how to access ASL interpretations using the SignUp Media extension:

- Install the free SignUp Media extension in Google Chrome.
- Open the SignUp Media extension and browse or search for a supported Netflix title.
- Select the title in the SignUp Media extension. It will open Netflix and start the show or movie.
- Watch with the ASL interpreter window that appears over the video, and move or resize it as needed.
