I don’t need to be the loudest advocate. I want to be the one you come to when you need real help. Over the summer, I felt like I had to be everywhere, so I joined every Zoom call, added credentials, and said yes to almost everything. Somewhere along the way, I started feeling competitive, and that’s not why I got into this work.

This year taught me that advocacy works best when we send people to whoever can help them most, even if it’s another group. It also taught me to watch for advocacy-washing and scams that prey on people who are eager to help. Partnerships taught me some hard lessons too. If a collaboration goes wrong, keep your dignity and keep moving forward.

Good partnerships do exist, and right now I’m planning a cancer walk with an amazing fellow advocate who shares the work and the credit. Being a friend with a listening ear and a good list of resources is still the heart of this work.
