Fancy meeting you Mr. Acupuncture Model from the Song Dynasty (1027) right here at the Mayo Clinic. It’s a replica, made of copper, and shows 365 of the over 1000 points that have been mapped out over the millennia. Mayo has had acupuncture available since the 1970’s and has six acupuncturists currently on staff. While at Mayo a few weeks ago, I met Dr. Erin Hupy, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellow at Mayo Clinic. We talked about my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?”, which I wrote to help people heal from the challenges of infertility. When I told her that I do acupuncture and health counseling for people trying to have a baby, she commented “Oh wow, I am always looking for acupuncturists to refer people to”. The other two statues I spent time with while at Mayo are not acupuncture models. They are William and Charles Mayo. Their statues have been in the plaza there since the 70’s when a worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. Like I have said to my patients and in my book, yes, life is a journey, but it is also a cycle.

Pumpkin soup has been an option at breakfast everyday here in Japan. A member of the squash family, pumpkins are actually a fruit because the vines have flowers and they contain seeds. In ancient Eastern nutrition, Pumpkins and yellow squashes are believed to enhance fertility and support “reproductive meridians”. In Western modern nutrition we know that pumpkins contain anti-oxidants, omega-3’s and other important micronutrients. Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc and other nutrients that are building blocks for estrogens. So do garnish your soup with some green seeds!

When I travel I always look for symbols and good luck charms for fertility. Yesterday in Takayama, Japan, I found this “Soboro”, which means faceless doll. Traditionally made from scraps of red cloth by grandmothers, it was given for luck in marriage, fertility, and childbirth. It is believed that the doll is faceless, so that each person can project their own hopes and intentions on the doll. This good luck charm evolved to be associated with good health if made from green cloth, good luck if made from yellow cloth, etc. Today in Kanazawa I will be looking for the “Jizo” dolls which are memorials to the souls of children lost in miscarriage. They are considered to be a memorial and way to grieve the loss. The Jizo doll has evolved to be a protector of travelers. I will be bringing Soboro and Jizo dolls home for my amazing infertility patients.

Today, as I headed out alone from the end of the dock for my last kayak adventure of the season, my protective husband called out, “Are you going to the left or right?”
“I don’t know”, I said, “I’ll paddle out and go whichever way the wind takes me.”
“There is no wind”, he said.
“There is always wind” I replied, “You just have to be still to feel it.”

I know my patients and people struggling with infertility must choose directions and make difficult decisions often. Should I stop drinking coffee? Should I have another IUI or move to IVF? Should I do a medicated or unmedicated embryo transfer?

As you move toward your wonderful goal of a healthy baby, stillness can help you feel the breezes in your heart that will nudge you or propel you in the right direction.

Stillness does not mean non-movement. When I stop paddling and glide, I sometimes put my finger in the water to see if I am actually moving. I always am. Stillness means shutting down the noise of the internet brings to us, eliminating things on your to do list, releasing yourself from being a people pleaser, being brave about saying NO to things you don’t want to do.

Kayaking can be meditational and a form of play that brings you to a still and peaceful place. If kayaking is not of interest to you, I have other ideas about how to seek stillness and how to play in my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?”, available on Amazon. ,

Today I had the honor of meeting former Arizona US representative Gabby Giffords who was shot in 2011 while meeting with constituents. In spite of her continuing aphasia and partial paralysis she has dedicated herself to advocating for sensible gun laws. The local chapter of Moms Demand Action, and candidates Deb Andraca and JodI Habush-Sinykin were on hand and Deb reminded the audience at the Audubon Center that gun violence is now the leading cause of death in people ages 1 to 19. I have always chosen to keep politics out of my professional communications, but PLEASE, be sure to vote in November for the candidates you believe will help us best protect our children. My infertility patients who have worked so hard to conceive and are going through IVF should not have to worry about sending their child off to school.

Wisconsin state representative Deb Andraca sent me the nicest congratulatory note when my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?” (About help and hope for infertility)was reviewed in the News Graphic. When I thanked her she said that she is so impressed with how many of her constituents in the 23rd district do amazing things. I am so impressed with the way she has been fighting for health and education issues that I am going to “do doors” for her before November 5th. I will tell you that I am terrified of getting bitten by a dog, but I will take the bite for democracy. She explained at an event that our chair people in the legislature often use a tactic called, “Gavel-in gavel-out”, when important bills come up, This expression means no discussion is allowed about the bills. This is not democracy. ,

In the 18th century Father Lazarro Spallanzani, a Jesuit priest and biologist, put shorts on male frogs to theoretically block fluids from reaching the female during mating. He did this to settle “scientific” arguments between “ovists” and “s***mists”. The latter group thought that an embryo baby was wholly contained in the fluids that came from the male during in*******se, and the woman was just a “receptacle” for the baby to grow. The “ovists” believed that it was the woman who contained a tiny fully formed baby, and in*******se just “stimulated” it to grow. Results were inconsistent at first, but when he waxed the shorts to make them more impermeable, it was clear that something in frog ej*****te was needed for conception. Many decades later with the invention of the microscope and practice of surgery, s***m and eggs were discovered and the whole picture came together. The evolution of reprodcutive knowledge is a fascinating story. For a bit more information see my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?”
I hand made these frog shorts for a photo in my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?” The frog was embalmed with formaldehyde when it arrived from a bio supplies company. So it was smelly but cooperative with fittings Please note: waxed shorts are probably not a reliable method of spacing children.

Keara and Stephanie are two more of the amazing women that I met at the Froedtert and MCW’s Annual Women’s Health Conference on April 19th at the Harley Davidson Museum. They are Doulas with the City of Milwaukee’s Birth Outcomes Made Better  Program, aka, BOMB. Doulas care for and support a woman during labor and delivery and in some cases provide pre-natal and post-partum support for things like breastfeeding. Research has shown that doula care is associated with more positive birth outcomes including fewer medical interventions. The program provides doulas to pregnant women living in Milwaukee, free of charge. Which is great because doula fees range between $500 and $2,000 dollars and are not covered by insurance in most states. God Bless you Keara and Stephanie. You can find more information by calling 414-286-8620, or by going to Milwaukee.gov/BOMB

Surprise ! It’s a baby! You may have read the reports about surprise pregnancies after struggling with infertility after being on Ozempic-like medications. Some women have said that they conceived while on birth control pills, but the jury is out on whether Ozempic interferes with BCP’s. According to Dr. Srividya Kidambi, the reason they enhance fertility is that women lost weight, which then helped to regulate their hormones. Speaking at the Annual MCW Women’s Health Conference, Dr. Kidambi said that Bariatric surgeons have known for years about the fertility enhancement that follows stomach stapling and gastric sleeves, which lead to weight loss. They call them “Bariatric Babies”. She added that many people regain weight after discontinuing Ozempic, as happens with many weight loss interventions. The good news is that research has found that even moderate, not crazy amounts of exercise will maintain weight loss.

GREAT NEWS! This decision by the Environmental Protection Agency that was announced on April 19th will make it easier for Wisconsin and other states to obtain federal funding for water testing and clean up of contaminated drinking water. Downstream, that means that there will be less reproductive hormone disruption for people trying to fall pregnant. I wish I could have included this great news in my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries”, available on Amazon to conceive

I’m here on the beach in a beautiful part of Mexico. On my morning stroll I hopped over a flotilla of plastic spoons lids, water bottles, etc. while most fish are not big enough to swallow a lid or bottle whole, the problem is that the plastic stuff degrades, leaving tiny plastic molecules that are easily ingested. And then we ingest the microplastic by eating the fish. Some scientists estimate that we have 100,000 pieces of microplastics on board. It is difficult to sort out how microplastics may affect infertility, endometrioses, fibroids, miscarriage, PCOS, etc., but studies of marine life and other mammals indicate that microplastics disrupt the reproductive system, stunt growth, and cause inflammation. So to be on the safe side, keep using those glass and metal containers I recommend in my book, “Who Stole My Ovaries?”

A More Fertile Approach to New Year’s Resolutions……
Resolutions and To Do lists are a good idea, intended to put us on a path to wellness and more orderly lives. But to do list items like “clean the basement” and “eat fewer desserts” can be burdensome and just no fun. So I am encouraging my fertility patients to simply make a list of 3 to 5 ways in which they would like to spend their precious time in 2024. Examples: Spend more time with friends, your hobby, or your cookbooks. Be outside more , with no other requirements. Create more space in the house, instead of “clean the basement” . These more general activities can feel more positive, freeing, and creative. Your choices may well lead to some of the things that are usually on our lists like “eat better” or “loose weight”. The goal here is to think carefully but more generally about how you want to spend your precious time. “Exercise more” has been replaced on my list by, “See how many new neighborhoods and parks I can walk in this year”. I walked in Eau Pleine Park today and photographed these acorns. In Ancient Greek Greek, Roman, and Celtic culture, acorns symbolize fertility and the possibility of creating new life. I know that enjoying a pregnancy or having a baby is how many of you would like to be spending your time in 2024. And to that end, I wish you good luck, great health, and all of God’s blessings.
