As a cholesterol specialist, I have opportunities to speak about causes of cholesterol disorders
But rarely two events on the same day like I did last week
Started the day early presenting at Preventative Cardiac Nurses Association Cardiac Connections Conference about Lipoprotein (a) on behalf of the Family Heart Foundation
Then off to catch a flight to Denver, where I spoke to a group of professionals about Familial Hypercholesterolemia
I was surprised and honored Dr. Falco an OG lipidologist I respect so much came to support me. He was one of the who cared for the child whose lipid disorder brought greater understanding to the science of the lipid disorder
His insights have been invaluable to all of us who study .
Being the Lipid geek I am - this was such a good day 🤓😊

LDL isn’t just a lab number. It’s one of the key particles that helps build plaque in the artery wall over time, and lowering it lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke. LDL is tied to atherosclerosis across the life course, and lower LDL is associated with fewer events. In large randomized trial meta-analysis, more intensive LDL lowering produced about a 15% further reduction in major vascular events, and each 1.0 mmol/L LDL reduction was associated with about a 22% lower rate of major vascular events. Observational plaque data also show that event rates track with plaque burden more than LDL alone —> LDL drives plaque formation, and plaque burden helps determine risk. Image created by Perplexity
