I've questioned anti-amyloid Alzheimer's drugs for years. Now, new research is raising serious concerns about their long-term benefits for patients.
A new study published in BMJ Neurology Open examined longer-term data for lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla). Researchers found that cognitive decline accelerated during the extended treatment periods, approaching rates seen in the original placebo groups.
Think about the implications.
These enormously expensive medications carry serious risks, including brain swelling, bleeding, and even death. Yet questions remain about whether their modest benefits are sustained over time.
I've long argued that removing amyloid plaques doesn't necessarily translate into meaningful benefits for patients. We need to look beyond amyloid and focus on neuroinflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and the role of microglia.
If you know someone affected by Alzheimer's, please share this post. This is information patients, caregivers, and physicians deserve to hear.
